Is it possible to get a decent classic rock (Hendrix, Trower) Strat tone with the H-S-H setup? Most of the threads I've read indicate that Silo is geared more towards a modern rock tone, while the SS is more of a vintage Strat tone.

Thanks,
Mark

I haven't played a HSH Silo, but I have an Ibanez with that setup. Since I was going for more of a vintage tone as well, I bought a SSH Silo Spec.

I'll let you know for sure probably in a couple weeks! :D

When I was test driving all the EBMMs I did find the S-S-H to be more of your classic rock tone. The H-S-H is more modern, but in as a Nu-metal modern though.
For me, I found the H-S-H to be more sonically flexible.

Foggy, good way to describe it. I really like the 4th position, very, very nice. :D

Glenn,
It's funny you should say that.
I shopped around and tried all the EBMMs but the Luke and Al at the time.
When I plugged in the H-S-H, that 4th position in a tube amp sold me instantly!!!!
Sonic heaven for me!!!
Had that particular Silo had a trem, I would have bought it on the spot.

Well theyre both alder bodies so its really a question of the pups - the silo special has a single coil in the neck so you get stratty tones but the bucker in the bridge you can get some mean dirty tones as well with the right pup, I find mine to be very versatile, I can jam anything with it, its really amazing, but I did change the bridge pup to get hotter tones

Foggy,

So what pickups are active in the 4th position, and what is the tone?

-Mark

As you can see below, coils 3 and 5 in parallel.

Foggy, you need to play an AL! You dont know what you are missing buddy! 4th position on an AL RULES!

I did mess with one, but knew better than to plug it in! :p
I'm about 90% sure an Al will be my no.2
I'm thinking mm90s w/piezo.

Maybe BFR!!! ;)

Keep in mind the 24 fretters are NOT nu-metal sounding. You clowns are tripping if you think that. Can it do that? With a properly goosed amp yes. The pickups are mid output Virtual PAFs and they're potted on the volly and tone w/ 250k's which takes a little high end and such out of the mix. I find that they're really transparent on my Sapphire Black...and even on high gain settings they're just smooth...you need to boost the living fock out of some to get overfizzled tone. that being said my Desert Gold is a little more robust and girthy sounding...but still not over the top like say a Tone Zone or Distortion will get you...with the 5-way you get access to a ton of tones, and adding a piezo will just add to the fun...

Over all the 24 fret Silo is my beast of choice of late...it's super versatile and if you want the best of all worlds, that's the one to get (including the 24fret deal)...

+1.

The PAFs are far from Hot ...... quite mild in fact.
