Ive changed both neck and bridge out now, but before i did i actually thought it was great for slow high gain leads ( not too high gain tho). has a nice openness about it that i liked for that type of playing. didnt use it that much for cleans as i prefered pos 2 3 and 4 for that.

For clean fingerpicking, pos 3 is the balls. For high gain leads, pos 5 (or am I backwards... LOL) is as good as it gets. But pos 1 is just plain bad to my ears with any amp/effect setup that I use.

Pos 2 sounds just like a strat's neck pickup.

Back off on the gain and/or volume if you find it too dark or muddy; you may find it to be quite different, and you might actually enjoy it. :)

You could try lowering the pickup away from the strings it may brighten things up a bit man. Easy and quick and worth a try.

(also try to lower the gain)

For clean solos with a pick, bluesy or jazzy
For jazz like rhythms
For sweet gain leads
For heavy chords

Almost anything, I love it. I play my cleans into a Blues Jr. with some delay, no EQ anywhere and it rocks with every pickup position.

My high gain setting is fairly bright with a bit of scoop and the neck position delivers a sweet singing tone, think JP's Wishful Thinking. The key to me is to EQ the high gain for the neck pickup, and then the bridge will just scream. If you EQ for the bridge, the neck will sound muddy IMHO

Try one, then the other, to see what seems better to you. What you end up going with will depend on your rig and your ears.

For me, these days, backing off on the guitar volume will do the trick, but I don't usually play high gain. This alone may not work for you, so you might need to adjust your amp as well.

Experiment a bit.

Lower the volume on my guitar or dont play it with so much distortion/gain on the amp?

Update!

I backed off of the guitar volume (10 to about 7) and it worked like a charm!

Everytime I had used the neck humbucker previously, I had the volume at 10 thinking that was the answer. As soon as I backed off the volume a little, the pickup seemed to come to life for my music.

Thanks!

:D

So... you guys are giving me **** because I dont know the real name of a neck pickup?

no, not at all. tnt and shane are just saying that they don't use neck buckers at all. i was saying that for me, the neck bucker gives me all the fat thick creamy "soulful" sounds that i like - and the bridge bucker is more "ballsy".
