Hy, I'm Italian. I bought a used Silhouette HSS with a Floyd bridge.
I don't like the sound. I want something more hard...!
Do you think I have to change guitar or change the PUP?
EMG sl-20 is a good set for this guitar? Other choices?

THX!!

Welcome aboard!

I've got a Luke, and I really LOVE the EMGs. Nice and bright sounds and they can get really nasty and dark when you put a little gain to it. I never played a silo before, so I cannot say if they sound more 'fat' (as you call) it than the EMGs.

But why did you buy your silo before you even tried it?

Check out the "Bare Knuckle" range of pups. Everybody in the UK is taking about them. To get the HARD sound, you may want the "nail bomb". Hand wired---hot to trot!

Don't change the guitar. If you like the feeling of the amazing necks, just change the PUPS. (in my op)

ps.......welcome :)

It's most definatly the pickups man. I have a brand new Silo h-s-h, but I kinda dont like the pickups at all. I mean they are great sounding, but not with how I play. So I am changing them in the next couple of days or week. Depends if my store has one of the pups in stock. All you have to do is probably just get a hotter pickup that suits you. I think EMGs are gonna be just fine. One of the forum members has almost all his Silo's with EMG's, if not all that is. I forget.

I sold the only silo I had that was not EMGed to Lame Duck. So I have 3 silos with 85,SA,89. I loved the stock pups but I liked the EMGs a little more. (for the cost of them I better) I think I'm done EMGing Silos. Next on the hit list is the anniv silo and I will want to keep it stock. I think I need another piezo trem silo for playing out so I can quit putting the Blue Dawn at risk. I really miss the position 2 single coil selection on the HSH silo with stock pups.

Pickups are soooo bloody subjective. Everybody's got a favourite and they always sound different when played through somebody else's rig ...

That said I like Bill Lawrences. 500L for the bridge is a killer yet versitile pickup.

I have just got my Floyd Silo back from the tech.

It now has Bareknuckles installed - 2 Irish Tour Singles and a Crawler Humbucker.

I wasnt going for the "hot" option - I wanted Strat tones with a thicker tone from the bridge. The important thing was that the set was well balanced - ie: no huge volume increase when you go from hum to single.

Check out http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ - you guys in the US will be hearing more about them.

Coincidentally the back humbucker that I took out was a Bill Lawrence L500 - if you want to make me an offer...... :)

When I get my sh*t together I'll record some samples of the 5 positions of the Silo.

DaveB,

What? You play the guitar, too? I didn't think you had time for that amidst your purchasing and modifying... ;)

Dude dudes dudes dudes! How many times do I have to tell you cats to not change the pups out, but change the Pots! 500k's will add a little more of the highs and cut that you need...besides humbuckers love 500k moreso than 250k pots...

A cheap alternative to getting new pickups...

OC, I'm usually a huge advocate of that as well, but with the Silo SSH I think the S's will end up sounding way too bright at the expense of the humbucker, don'tcha think?

DaveB- those Lawrences really are killer PUs! Problem with them is that there are a line of fakes (also labelled as Lawrences) that SUCK. If it sounds as bad as you said then I'd wager it was a fake. But really cool that you like those Bareknuckles and I look forward to checking 'em out in person sometime ;)

I JUST bought a pair of BREED DiMarzio PUPs for my Silo. I am keeping the single coil for more versatility and twanginess. I'll update you people once I throw them in to the beast.
OC what do you think of my choice? I believe you said somewhere before you like these. Are they gonna be pretty versetile?

In Roubie's case, I'd still replace the pots...Breeds are pretty close to the Paf Pro, little hotter but not much different. My Silo has the Virtual PAFs in there....I think it'll greatly benefit from a pot value change....

The Lawrence didnt sound bad - it was just that it totally overpowered all the other settings on the guitar. I have other EBMMs for the high gain kick - I wanted something a little more strat like tone-wise.

You're more than welcome to try it out.

:D ....
I have EMG on my Strato and I think it's a very good solution!.... so I'm thinking to do the same with the Silo. Will the Silo EMG loaded sound like the Luke model?
I'm looking for someone who has to sell a pickguard EMG loaded..! :D

Even with the coil tap pot on the volume knob there is just enough room for the battery (wrapped in electrical tape of course) under the tone pot. yes you have to pop the hood to change the battery but that only happens once a year or so. The last 2 times I wanted to change the battery I pulled it and tested it and it was just fine. Just unplug your guitar when you are not using it. <--That is a rule for many reasons.
