Hi all - I'm thinking of swapping one of my Axis Sport MM90's for a Silo hardtail w/ 3 single coils, local deal. I've never seen a Silo like this, so does anyone know how the hum is with the singles, and would they be the Dimarzio custom as on the newer ones? Also, is this an older discontinued model?

For the voyeurs in the crowd - Here's my Axis Sport #2, had it refinished in black semi-gloss lacquer, no top coat.

Best,

you should consider having a Silo Special, guess there are more out there with 3 SCs.
there's a circuit in the Silo Special, which eliminates the hum.

A Silo with 3 single coils would be at least 12 years old by now; I think they dropped all pickup options execept for HSH around 1997/98 or so - after the Silo Special had been out for a few years. Therefore I don't think a single-coil Silo would have the Silent Circuit, but I could be wrong. It seems like it took a couple of years for the Silent Circuit to make it's way into the Albert Lee, so EBMM probably never added it to the Silo since they were moving to that model being HSH only by that point in time.

Regarding pickups - if the Silo is an 80s model it would probably have Schaller single coils; seems like the switch to DiMarzio happend somewhere between 1990 and 1992.

Thanks - great info! I've tried Schaller humbuckers on a couple of 24.75" guitars and they were really good, Golden 50's I guess - like a smoother, clearer Gibson 57 or mellower SD 59.

Unless it's very old - then there is only the option of opening up the pickguard and looking into the stamps.

As for Schaller PUs - I have seen 1986 silos with Dimarzio singles already, so the change was deffinitely in the 80-s. My old silo has Schallers, though, and I do like them very much.

Cool - I didn't know that. I think I only saw 3 Silos in the flesh in that 1986 - 1990 time frame and all 3 had those Schaller pickups. I just assumed there was a wholesale switch from Schaller to DiMarzio for the Silo at some point in time and just pegged it to be around 1990 (during the development of the EVH); of course the Steve Morse model always had his signature DiMarzio pickups.

Earlier Silos could be had with 22 frets and SSS configuration. There's one near me that's a 96. Recessed neck plate and Silo designation (not silo spec). It happens to have been modded with 3 EMG's. It's priced about what a Sub 1 would go for!

Jack - that guitar near you is really a Silhouette Special. The first runs of the Silo Special (from its introduction in mid-1995 until early in 1996) had regular "Silhouette" headstock decals. Since the guitar is a '96 it is probably among the last that went out with a "Silhouette" decal.

At a SUB 1 price that guitar is a steal even if you would want to switch back to passive pickups.
