for heavy you would probably need to change the humbucker for sth hotter. The stock one is cool and nice for riffs and rock but for very heavy I think it will lack a bit
I personally think metal tone is more about which amp is used with the silo special. The stock pickups have a fair amount of output. Not "high gain" per se, but more than your average strat.
I think the arguement over 'clean' and 'distorted' pickups is a bit false. Ultimately, all pickups simply output a (tiny) voltage signal. It's how this signal drives the pre-amp, and then the power amp, that drives the gain structure.
I'd say that a Silo should be great for metal. See if you can try one with your amp so that you can get a feel for how it works.
my stock Silhouette Special sounds pretty damn heavy through my Mesa Boogie Mark IV lead channel...
then a flip of the pickup selector switch and a click of the footswitch and I've got a fat, twangy clean sound...
I love this new guitar and amp...
my only issue with the Silhouette Special is that I can't get that thick neck humbucker high up the neck lead sound with it (but I love the single coil sound so I'm not going to be swapping any pickups)... I am just going to have to buy another Silhouette, one of the HSH ones or something...
Lots of guys play metal/prog rock through Silo Specials. Not a problem there. Lots of guys also play heavy rock with just single coil guitars ...
Music is really in the heart and the hands. You can play just about any style on any guitar if it's in you. So yeah, this guitar is perfectly suited for that.
I used a silo special in a metal band for years, its an awesome guitar however the stock pups didnt cut it for me, for the record I put a duncan distortion trembucker in the bridge and the guitar sounds as heavy as anything else, remember its an alder bolt on guitar just like the high end jacksons and ESP's that alot of metal guys are using, only its got a better neck and it will stay in tune - i can send you some clips of clean and dirty tones I recorded with my silo special with the duncan, BTW I highly recommend the distortion pup for that guitar, cuts nice and sounds thick -
The Silo Special is a great guitar for Blues, Rock, Hard Rock and perhaps Metal. If you play metal like early Priest or Maiden, I think it will do fine. If you want some balls-out death metal chunk, you might want to consider swapping out the bridge PU like lock-ny indicated.
i dont have much of a guitar rig. i use a blues junior w/ pedals... and honestly with the right pedal i can play metal on my AL. honestly. like the guys said, id assume the silo spec would be fine depending on your rig
