Hey guys. I've read a lot of different posts about both the silo and the JP6, JP7, etc. ive also seen a lot of comparisons between the guitars like the necks, trems, and pickups. just a question about the pickups, how do the 2 sets compare with each other? i know pretty much the JP is a very big hard rock and metal esk guitar but i havent heard too much about the silo pickups cept that they're more like classic to hard rock ish pups. whats your take on it? also any another comparisons that i probably havent heard of would be cool

They are medium output pickup. Paf based so slightly scooped. love it when you give em plenty of mids on th amp. they dont like too much gain and tend to loose a bit of definition i felt but can handle a good bit mind you. the cleans on them are beautifull and they split very very well. i think your right when you say they'll do the classic rock thing well and can be pushed but not too hard. They also clean up well when you roll back. the Jps are much higher output the d sonic has plenty of mids and bite. the air norton is very smooth and dark.

these were jsut my impressions anyway.

In my experience they can handle all the distortion you give them. They retain definition and really scream, only that you lose a little attack and bottom end. Use the neck pickup and roll back the volume a little to get those back for fast picking. I wish the bridge had more bass and harmonics, but it's a trade off for the great vintage cleans it pulls out. I might swap it for a Norton some day.

They both handle well in distortion. The JP IMO holds up through it much better tonally speaking. There's just a few things that make the sound from the pups in the JP just really punch through with a nice warm and heavy tone (the BFR that is). The regular JP6 does the same things just backed off the warm tone a little bit more (doesn't have the mahogany tone block), it sounds a little brighter.

EDIT: I just went back to recheck my impressions of the Silo in a distortion setting. The neck pickup doesn't lack attack at all, and the bass is fine with my distortion cranked. It's the bridge pickup that's missing a bit of those, but like I said before, it screams with lots of mids, just not too much harmonics, and there's not that pureness of the tone of the JP, it's very raw in comparison, but I like that. (comparisons based on my listening of other's playing on their JPs and of course Pettrucci himself, I haven't played a JP)

yes i must say i never really had much of an issue with the neck pickup on the most part. For me the bridge pickup was the one that lost a bit of definition for the harder stuff i felt that wide open chords with gain just didnt have the clarity that i was looking for but tbh i could be picky. Just my preference tho. I adore the cleans it gives when split with the center coil tho.

Depends on what range of Metal. The D-Sonics are simply hotter pick ups, so they are much better pronounced at high gain.

I definitely think that the SIlo can do metal to a point, but I think the stock pick ups will need to be changed. THe bridge anyways. But stock it can do metal, but as mentioned earlier, the JP will definitely do it better.

I literally just A/B'd my JP6 versus my wife's Silhouette through my Bogner Uberschall with the gain dimed. The Silo can hold its own. The JP6 is definitely hotter, but the Silo sounded pretty good. It sounded a little thinner to me than the JP6. Didn't have as much bottom end to it, but this could be because there are 9s on the Silo and 10s on the JP6.
