Silo VS Silo Special

Hi all,

I've got my EBMM JP6 like a year ago, and after several try and setting with my guitar tech, I finally got the perfect setting on my JP and I'm very happy with it.

For now, I'm going to get another EBMM. Silo Special should be my first choice - with the HSS setting, it should be one of the most versatile guitar available. However, there's a 2nd hand Silo in town, and it's price is less than 50% of the Silo Special. I'm now struggling which one to pick. I don't have any HSS or HSH guitar in my collection, but I'm slightly leaning to HSS.

It would be great if anyone can share with me on your experience on the Silo/Silo Special.

I like the Silo special because it has 22 frets and is more traditional the silo has 24 frets and has a more modern sound. try before you buy if you can

Both are good guitars, however, it boils down to preference.

The Silo:
+ 24 frets
+ humbucker in neck position
- Harder to get a propper strat tone out of it

The Silo Special:
+ Does strat tones very well because of the single coil in the neck position
+ Silent circuit for the single coil (no hum)
- 22 frets (but this is personal eh ).

The only reason to choose a Silo Special over a Silo IMO is strat tones.

If you have Strat.
You should get a Silhouette.
The tone of the neck pickup is great.

For what ever reason, I like the size and balance of the Silo Special better. I don't have a standard Silhouette, but I've got a 20th Anniversary Silhouette. I prefer the overall size and balance of the SS to my 20th. I did try a few Silhouettes too before I bought my SS and I kept going back to the SS -- it just seemed to fit me better.

I would agree that the Silhouette has a wider range of tones...but the Silo Special's tones are much sweeter Just my humble opinion of course

For what ever reason, I like the size and balance of the Silo Special better. I don't have a standard Silhouette, but I've got a 20th Anniversary Silhouette. I prefer the overall size and balance of the SS to my 20th. I did try a few Silhouettes too before I bought my SS and I kept going back to the SS -- it just seemed to fit me better.

+1. The body shape differences are subtle, but the special just feels perfect.

You've got a JP6. That's the 24 fret tones covered. Do you really want another 24 fretter? The tones generated by the 22 fretted Silo Spec will be a lot different, and that what I think you should cover first. THEN get the 24 fretted Silo later if that's what you really want after.

Get the Silo Spec.

The Pet is extremely versatile, you'll be able to cover anything for your 24 fretted/humbucking needs.

Now that you're investing in a new axe, you'll want to take it in the entirely opposite direction. Silo Spec, HSS or SSS, with a maple board.

Guitars are expensive (duh) so if you're going to invest in another one you may want to make sure you're covering as many bases as possible. Be versatile!

which configuration has the silo that is available? Some older silos also have SSS or HSS pickup configuration. Or maybe even Floyd Rose. But standard silo is HSH

Concerning the body differences...think of a Silo as an Olympus......and the Silo Spec as a Canon.

Have both and love them, the special with the HSS is a great guitar but more for a traditional tones, if you play a little more on the heavy rock side the silo whth HSH has better tones.

Also my silo has the floyd rose so it is more intended for a more aggresive playing, not that the special can not hang with it since it stays very well in tune, but that's the way I feel them to me.

Having the opportunity to play it and cheaper price may be a good thing to try... good luck with your choice.

I have a pair of 6-bolt Silo's and I really like them. The notch positions - especially between the neck pup and the middle single coil are super, but I find the switch in position 3 most of the time - that single coil is just SWEET.

I had a Silo Special first, but it just didn't suit me that well - but I loved the rare Burnt Apple finish.

You really can't go wrong with either choice - or any EBMM for that matter.

I recently acquired an Albert Lee signature model. I love the neck, but the Silo's sound better to me.
