Silos - are they alder or ash?

Current website spec sez they're alder.

But both of these current eBay offerings - one over ten years old, the other "brand new" - look rather ashen to me:

Anyone know the scoop?

And if ash was formerly used, why the switch to alder? Two totally different tonewoods, if ya ask my ear...and I'll take ash hands down, thank ya very much!

They were originally made in Alder, Ash or Poplar - you (the buyer) had a choice of body wood depending on the finish... I know the contemporary spec is Alder only, but I think they were still making some Ash ones as late as '97-'98, anyway... Mine is certainly Ash, but it's from 1992.

PS- as nice as that natural Silhouette with the Floyd looks, I think the seller is dreaming in technicolor if he thinks someone is going to drop a cool grand on it...

Jimi is so right. I have a 93 and a 98 ash. A 98 poplar. and a 03 Alder. All but the 98 Ash have EMG's and even with that they all sound different. I also agree with you that ash is my personal favorite. For what the poplar and alder do though, they sound beautiful and I couldn't live without them.
