Hi, I'm considering ordering an SLO Special and have a couple questions since I can't locate one in person - and where better to ask than here? :) For reference, I have an '03 Sterling, and I've heard the necks aren't completely identical.

The Ray neck gets too wide for me as I go higher up on the fretboard and my hand can't reach around it. I've read that the SLO neck also gets wider than the Sterling's neck. Does it approach Ray Like Dimensions towards the 10th-12th fret?

What's the SLO's string spacing?

Are there any measurements from front to back of the neck?

Finally - has the Sterling neck changed over the years? It seems like the neck on the Big Al is flatter (from front to back) than my Sterling and gets wider as you go up the fretboard. My Sterling is more curved.

Thanks!

I have previously asked this question and BP responded: Stingray headstock !

Then the tuners must be possitioned differently? Since the nut widt is slimmer for the strings to go straight into the tuners the tuners should be lined up in a simular way to sterling or big al....

I find this weird. The stering and slo necks have the same nut widt and 21 fret widt so they should be simillar if you look at them from the front. Im not sure abouth the neck shape at the back.
But you say that you find the standard stingray neck too wide at the higher frets. Well the slo necks and sterling necks have the exact same size on the higher frets. They are only slimmer at the nut. So it will only be better for you if you find the low frets too wide. From the 12th till the 21st fret there is litl difference in widt of the neck. As stated above im not sure about the thickness of the slo neck at the back. On the sterling the neck is a bit slimmer wich makes the upper fret a bit easier to play for some people.

I wonder if some of it has to do with fret placement since the 'Ray has 21 frets and the Sterling 22.

My Sterling measures 55mm (2 1/8 inches) at the 12th fret and a hair under 60mm (2.5 inches) at the last fret.
Same measurements as my Jazz, but worlds better to play.

I'm very curious if anyone knows about neck thickness.

From what i read the slo should be the same as a sterling neck. Also the neck thickness and profile should be the same. Only the stingray has a different neck to body transition. I should have an slo i a few months so ill be sure then.

I own both and don't notice a difference. The dimensions of the neck appear to be the same. If you already play a Sterling... you won't notice a difference.
