SMY2D owners post your amps.

Currently in the market for a new amp for my Y2d; my current amp is a TElliot C100 Speed Twin which doesn't seem to cut the mustard with this axe.. (either that or I just crave a diff sound after 10 years..)..

What do you think works well with the Y2D? Anyone tried it with the Engl Morse model?

I'm surprised the speed twin doesn't cut it for you, maybe it needs a re tube? I had one for years and it was great. I currently use an Egnater tourmaster with my Y2D and it's a wonderful combination.

It's a great amp.. I've recently had the EL34s replaced with Svetlana winged Cs after the original Grovers blew.. Also had the pre-amp replaced with JJs.. Since then it sounds awful..harsh and unmusical. I've checked the bias..tried slight variations to small effect; I've been using them for about, maybe 15 hours now at bedroom levels..perhaps they need more running in?.. I don't know whether;

1.) The new tubes are just not run in.
2.) The Svetlanas don't suit this amp.
3.) The amp/guitar is just not a good mix.
4.) A combo of all the above..

Thanks...I'm in Melb; I thought the original tubes were Grovers (is there such a brand?).. Can you remember what yours came with? I still have one original pre-amp tube left..will check it when I get home.

try putting the original preamp tubes back in while keeping the winged c's in..
winged c 's are the best 34's out there. preamp tubes hold up ALOT longer than power tubes....

That's what I've done; the amp blew out soon after I've got the Y2d. I took it to an amp repairer as the amp by then was nearing 10 years of constant usage. He identified one of the 34s as faulty and then recommended the Winged Cs stating the same; being the best etc. At that stage I still had the original pre-amp tubes but the amp never sounded the same again; harsh..unmusical.. Power chords and rythm is OK but single notes sound brittle..pinch harmonics awful! So I figured, after a few weeks that the pre-amp tubes probably need replacing at which time I purchased some highly recommended JJs. I did notice an improvment; overdrive richer etc but the harshness remained as before.. This is why I was asking whether maybe the new power tubes just need to be burned in more.. Putting some music through the amp and leaving it on high volume for a few hours.. I should also point out that the guy overbiased them as he too was saying how harsh it sounded.. I tried the original bias as well as a few mv to either side..

I've tried various values; for example the manual states something like 33.3 mV and the guy had it at around 35 or 36 (he was trying to find the sweetspot as well with the new tubes..).. So I set it back to 33.3..then tried slightly higher and lower values. The changes in tone were noticeable, for example hotter/more overdriven to more headroom on the lower settings but the harshness remained throughout. I will rent a rehearsal room for an afternoon and cream it..failing that will try different tubes failing that..new amp

I used a Speed Twin for a while when they were first released, always sounded nice and warm and never had any problems with it.

I am now using a Blackstar Artisan 30 Head with Blackstar 2x12 Artisan Cab.

The amp is set clean and I am getting my gain from a Blackstar HT Duel.

The sound is awesome, big, fat and creamy with no top end fizz or brittleness.

I'm loving it.

i´m using a mesa/boogie roadster and a dual rectifier (3-channel).
really like the sound that comes from the speakers.
maybe i´m changing the dual recto for a 6505+ in the near future.
the roadster is a tone-monster and i can get the classical recto sound out of it as well, so a different sounding amp would be nice, this is the only reason for changing the dual recto to a 6505+.

btw. Y2D plus 6505+/5150II sounds like a steve morse setup....or did he play the peavey heads only with his original guitar?

Yep, I was there at the Albert Hall in '99. Steves tone has always been super mesmerising every time I catch him play. The man is like a full orchestra all on his own. Never known him sound anything but perfection. What else can you say

He has to be the most fussy guy about the tone & sound that he wants than any other guitarist. Still, guess if you are that good you have to put challenges up for yourself to keep striving forward.

I want Tommy's job so I can watch him every night S'alright Tommy you not out of a job you can be my right hand man and still do all the work haha

I've been with Tommy at a couple of DP shows and you actually are standing behind Steve Morse. the job you want is doing monitors. You could have your own mix and sit back and enjoy the show

After the Royal Albert Hall, DP made a tour in Europe with the Romanian Philharmonic Orchestra. I have see them in Paris (October 25, 2000). Wonderful show !

I second that; best concert DVD I've ever seen; musically diverse, sonically and visually stunning and some simply ethereal guitar work. I've shown bits of that concert to many people, some are musos most are not..wide range of backgrounds and ages and the effect was unanimous. Conversely, since seeing that concert, around 7 years ago now, I've been wanting a Morse model as he became the one grand-unifying persona of all that I appreciate in guitar. Then last year, in a moment of madness during one Friday lunch, I drew some money against my home-loan and went to purchase it.. When I got to the store, I saw that it wasn't his original model..infact I didn't even know about the Y2D (saw him using it in Melb with Deep Purple and remember thinking, what is that guitar and why is he not using his own signature..).. Then trying it out at the shop..the guy explaining that it was his 20th anniversary etc..I bought it. No regrets but did take a long while to get comfy with it.. Not the easiest guitar to play..fantastic but unforgiving; if you make a mistake, everyone will know it.
