So, I almost had a heart attach this past weekend...

Played a show in my hometown of Rock Hill SC this past Friday night, and completely rocked the house! We did a CO - Headline show with another band, we went on first and played about on hour's worth of our originals. After we were done, we were hurrying to break down our gear so the other band could get on stage and we could get to drinking with the fans. I laid my stingray in it's case and shut the case. During this time, people were coming up to the stage and wanting to meet us and shake our hands, bla, bla, bla. I reached down to pick up my stingrays case, and WHAM!!! I had forgot to lock the case hinges because I was getting distracted by everyone. The bass fell out, slid across the top part of the inside of the case, and then face down onto the stage. I literally felt my heart stop beating! I picked up to insect the damage, and believe it or not, it had no damage except for a small scratch about 1/8 of an inch long that isn't even noticeable unless you hold it a certain way in the light! I always wondered how hard the finish was on the bass, and now I know lol. Definitely not trying that again, but at least I was able to go on enjoying the rest of the night without feeling bad about my bass!

I´ve done the exact same thing with a Gibson EB-2D from 1965. Less than a year ago. Smack right down on the floor. I almost died. Not a very pleasant experience at all. Much to my surprice (and relief), not a scratch on that one either. Good thing. But the whole experience is not good for the old heart. Better to lock the hinges. Much better.....

Koogie, I'll PM you tomorrow when I get home tomorrow, we'll definitely have to set something up! 57fenderjazz, I didn't buy a lottery ticket, but I did get lucky in the sense that the manager told me all the alcohol I could handle was on the house, and I was surrounded by women for the rest of the night . It took me 3 days to get over my hangover, and that's no lie! Hellboy, I'm glad I'm not the only Dumb A$$ around here lol. Some chick video taped the show, if she ever post it, I'll put it up. I'll ask her if she taped me dropping my bass too lol.

Good thing you have a solidly built bass! I did that in -89 with a Washburn Stage B-20, broke the head square off!

I dropped one of my first Bongos, a Desert Gold HH 4....slid it into the gig bag (damned gig bags!) standing straight up, did NOT ZIP IT, got distracted by someone talking to me, and while I was holding just the very top of the gig bag (damned gig bags!), it just leaned over and - WHANG! Right on its face. It bent the post on the volume knob a bit but was otherwise fine.

I also flung a 30th SR4 across a wooden dance floor. Had it strapped on, slung around back while talking to someone and the Dunlop straplocks (Dunlop!) I used to use just let go. Oooo, that one made a horrific noise. I was pretty sure there was going to be damage.....nope, built like a tank. I couldn't even find a scratch.

Lesson one: use a hardshell case.

Lesson two: use Ernie Ball straplocks.

It's funny, the only dings in my basses happened when I let someone borrow itfor some recording work. I was gutted, as it wasn't even ME who inflicted it upon the poor bass. |

Yngwie Malmsteen does all these tricks during his concerts and one thing he does is that he takes his guitar and toss the neck over his left shoulder while the guitar is strapped onto him. The idea is that the neck and the guitar will come back up again under his right arm and then he just grabs it and continue to play... We´ve all seen this quite many times. Cool trick.... Now that did not happen at one time. The strap let go and the guitar flew across the stage and landed quite far off. And there was soo much theatrical smoke on stage that Yngwie had to crawl around on his knees trying to find his guitar and it took awhile. It happened during a concert here in Stockholm that I saw since two friends used to play with Yngwie at that time. I laughed my head off. Looks hysterical when a rock star is crawling around on stage during a concert trying to find his guitar. Especially when it´s Yngwie Malmsteen doing it.....

He should get some EB straplocks..... Or just toss pick to the audience.....

If you look at the pictures of my old black sr4 you can easily see that it has been used and abused a lot. It dropped from straps, was kicked about by careless people, drenched with beer and some other liquids but it is alive and sounds great. Those basses are built to last.

Only thing i managed was to rubb off the finish, most likely because i used to have a leatherstrap at my right wrist for some years of extensive pick-playing on the bass.

Surprisingliy the black colour is gone, but it looks like the clear coat is still there. Can this be possible?

I agree to both of these quotes lol. Here's te reason why I had such a bad hangover. I got up at 7 am Friday morning to start getting everything ready to leave town for the show. I ate a small frozen healthy choice lunch around 11 am, that was all I ate for the rest of the day except for a power bar I grabbed at a gas station on the trip up to Rock Hill ( a little over 3 hours drive ). I started feeling a little drained later in the evening, and didn't want to eat fast food because it really sits heavy on my stomach, and decreases my performance on stage. I drank a 7 hour energy drink along with 3 beers before we played. Our set lasted about 55 minutes or so, and we go all out when we play, so I was a little thirsty after the set. After our set, all of the bars staff bought Tshirts from us, and then the manager said we could have as many pitchers of beer as we could handle. Our singer was the DD, so the rest of us were pretty much walking around with a pitcher in our hand lol. This was my and my guitarist hometown show, and a lot of people that we haven't seen in over 15 years came out, high school friends, college buddies, and old band mates from previous bands. It was cool as hell. Plus the bar sits straight across the street from Winthrop University so their were a lot of college kids there too Anyways, there seemed to be a lot of "here, I bought you a drink, or a shot" I would drink it, and then ask "what was that" lol? I know that I drank over 2 1/2 pitchers of beer to myself, plus the beer I had earlier, plus a few Jagger Bombs, A shot of Captain, Tequila, Liquid Cocaine (1/2 Jager and 1/2 Goldschlager), and a bunch of other mixed concoctions that I don't recommend. Needless to say I was pretty lit up lol. We finally got back to the Hotel around 4am because we stayed and drank with the bar staff after they closed the bar at 2am, keep in mind that we were done playing by 11:30 pm. That 7 hour energy drink kept me awake until about 5 am, and then we got up at 9 am and headed back to Charleston. I don't encourage anyone to drink that much, anytime lol. I honestly didn't start feeling better until Tuesday this week. The show wasn't by any means the biggest we've ever played, but it was one of our better performances. The band that we played with did a great job too, and everyone got along great and it was just one huge party. We're playing with Jimmies Chicken Shack down here in two weeks, I think I'll take it easy on the alcohol this time after the show lol.
