So I Signed Up For Guitar Lessons...

Things are finally starting to settle down around here, so I went ahead and bit the bullet and signed up for lessons. While I'm pretty confident in my playing, (I took a few years of lessons when I was a younger) I find myself playing the same things over and over and never venturing outside of my "comfort zone" I feel the lessons could be a fun way of learning new things and getting out of the comfort zone.

My first lesson is tomorrow I'll be bringing my 25th

I'd like to take some lessons myself. Concentrate on my weaknesses and try to expand into different and harder stuff. Good for you getting out there and doing it!

After having bad experiences with lessons earlier in life (I had two would-be teachers tell me to give it up because my fingers were too short), I decided to give them a shot again when I first got my Axis in an attempt to make myself worthy of the guitar. In those couple of months, I progressed more than in years of playing on my own. Unfortunately, I ran out of $$ and had to drop them, but I'd like to do it again some day.

yeah ive been thinking about lessons lately too, been stuck in a rut the last few months and just play all the same things.. id actually like to music theory aswell.. just need to find a good teacher locally.

I started taking jazz guitar lesson a few years ago. It's freakin' awesome. I found a guy who really knows his stuff, he took lessons from greats like Pat Martino and he is like an encyclopedia when it comes to jazz history. He gives me chord/melody pieces, straight solos and theory. The best solos are the horn solos. You wanna build up your chops? Try a Charlie Parker solo like "Donna Lee." It forces you way out of any box you're playing, you go crazy just trying to figure out where to play each phrase on the fretboard to get some sort of reasonable finger-ing (if that word makes sense).

If I opted to start lessons again I would definitely look for a Jazz teacher, like Ernie said, it just opens up so many new avenues

Awesome larry, i need to do the same, had some early on but had a bad, no horrible instructor, turned me off, but if the elbow heals plan on trying again, i too am in a rut when i can play.

Reading music and reading tabs couldnt be more different! Guitar World doesnt even provide the notation so its just tab, which is really bad. Dont need lessons to read tab surely??

I learned to read music when I was a lot younger (both bass clef as well as treble clef). Surprisingly you don't forget it. I was pretty shocked when I opened up a music book at the store and still could remember pretty much everything.
