Big mistake........
played the guitar for about 5 minutes and took it right back to the shop to have them put the stock pups back in there.....will have it back today........praying that it will be the same as it was. Some of you warned me, I know, I know, you told me so..........at least I am man enough to admit my mistakes.
I'll try almost anything once,.....if you never take a chance, you will never know.......sometimes it is good, sometimes not-so-much. I am really a tone freak, and more so as the years go by.......I've spent more than 250 dollars extra to have my TS-9, BD-2, and GE-7 modded by analogman for a little bit of extra tone.......so this pup swap was a BIG change.
Anyway, dropped a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a 59' in the neck......pretty common yet very popular and successful pups, here are my tonal reviews.
JB - First off, it pretty much went from a 5 position switch to a 3 position, with neck being 1st position and bridge being 5, all I had was 1,3, and 5. The JB had a LOT less output, and sounded actually very thin as well. 4th position ws rendered virually useless; sounded slightly different than position 5, but barely noticable and nothing like the stock pup. That was a dealbreaker in itself for me, position 4 is about my main rythmn tone.
59' - The 59' wasn't that bad actually,.....gave more of an alder/strat/bluesy type tone using position 1 full neck. Position 2 was gone, though, not a dealbreaker for me, but neck wasn't bad. The 59' did start to break-up, get a little crunchy, muddy, and lose clarity when pushed with some higher gain.......clean/very low gain was really nice, but high gain ( and not extreme metal high gain, more like hard rock/classic rock high gain) was a no-go.
Anyway, hopes this helps some of you from spending two or three hundred dollars for nothing, along with the realization that for your extra hard-earned dollars you have just turned your 1500 dollar guitar into sounding like a 500 dollar guitar, and the resulting sinking feeling and depression that ensues thereafter...
