Big mistake........ played the guitar for about 5 minutes and took it right back to the shop to have them put the stock pups back in there.....will have it back today........praying that it will be the same as it was. Some of you warned me, I know, I know, you told me so..........at least I am man enough to admit my mistakes. :) I'll try almost anything once,.....if you never take a chance, you will never know.......sometimes it is good, sometimes not-so-much. I am really a tone freak, and more so as the years go by.......I've spent more than 250 dollars extra to have my TS-9, BD-2, and GE-7 modded by analogman for a little bit of extra tone.......so this pup swap was a BIG change.

Anyway, dropped a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a 59' in the neck......pretty common yet very popular and successful pups, here are my tonal reviews.

JB - First off, it pretty much went from a 5 position switch to a 3 position, with neck being 1st position and bridge being 5, all I had was 1,3, and 5. The JB had a LOT less output, and sounded actually very thin as well. 4th position ws rendered virually useless; sounded slightly different than position 5, but barely noticable and nothing like the stock pup. That was a dealbreaker in itself for me, position 4 is about my main rythmn tone.

59' - The 59' wasn't that bad actually,.....gave more of an alder/strat/bluesy type tone using position 1 full neck. Position 2 was gone, though, not a dealbreaker for me, but neck wasn't bad. The 59' did start to break-up, get a little crunchy, muddy, and lose clarity when pushed with some higher gain.......clean/very low gain was really nice, but high gain ( and not extreme metal high gain, more like hard rock/classic rock high gain) was a no-go.

Anyway, hopes this helps some of you from spending two or three hundred dollars for nothing, along with the realization that for your extra hard-earned dollars you have just turned your 1500 dollar guitar into sounding like a 500 dollar guitar, and the resulting sinking feeling and depression that ensues thereafter...

The old JB's from the 80's labeled JBJ were different from what I hear, I had one and it was a great pup however I'd never touch the pickups in the Axis cause they are perfect. One of the few guitars where you got a pickup made specifically for that axe and its dead on. I love to tinker as well, but not touching those pickups thats for sure!

Yeah, I am a tinkerer myself, however, the Axis SS pups are the bomb.......I did put graphtech saddles on her and strap locks; those were a good investment and an improvement, but that will be it. Just got her back from the shop, she sounds as good or better than before I decided to swap pups........maybe it sounds better because of how bad it sounded with the JB and 59'....
They were made for this guitar...if it ain't broke..don't fix it! :)

I think one of the largest differences in the pickups set is that the Axis pups are really hot, much hotter than I thought at first, although the neck especially doesn't particularly sound that hot, as they are clear all the way through. EB definitely got it right with these pickups.

Big Poppa used to use some analogy .. wasn't it something like Well you wouldn't put a Lada engine in a Ferrari?

Anyway - it's great to mess around with ones guitar - hell if ya didn't we'd all be running "horseshoe magnet" pickups. It's just a shame that one has to take such invasive surgery to a guitar to arrive at one's conclusion - still it'll go back to stock no probs. edit - looks like it did.

I'm a tinkerer too. In fact, I posted a thread about modding my ALs a little while ago. While I enjoy swapping around the single coils on my AL, I have found that the HH AL is absolutely perfect right from the factory. I tried a bunch of different combos in there too. Stock rules them all! Coincidentally, the HH AL has the same pickups, I believe, as the Axis SS - go figure! :)

I don't know much about he JB other than it is not a hot output pup. I never got along with the bridge pickup in my A.S.S. I thought it sounded a bit thin but I loved the neck pup!

The ASS pups are great and as brokenvail said the neck pup is awesome. It has such a fat warm sound that i have never heard anywhere else. I was never a DiMarzio fan until i heard what EBMM had done to theirs, total magic.
