Well, I absolutely love my SR5. It took me some time to get used to a 5th string, but now everything is OK for me.

Though, I love the vibe of 4ers. I made my decision : next bass (in addition to SR5, not in replacement) will be an SR4.

Why not a Sterling ? I have nothing against BP , but the fact is, I like necks to be a bit wider than that. Sorry about talking about another brand, but I always felt more "at home" on a P than on a J.

I don't know yet if I'll choose a maple or rosewood fingerboard. My SR5 is rosewood, I guess taking a maple 4 would be a good addition. But who knows ?

Pickup config : single H. For me, it's "the real thing". The real Ray vibe.

Now the finish. Oh, I don't know. Tempted by tobacco burst, tempted by pacific blue burst, tempted by natural, tempted by black. Hard to choose.

Anyway, this purchase is not for now. I have time to make my decision on finish.

Any suggestion - of any kind - will be welcome.

Why not at least consider a Bongo? I know, I know, they're not for everyone, although I really can't figure out why not.

Having said that, I've fallen back in love with single H Stingrays lately. I'm not giving up my title or my Bongos or anything, but I'm having a serious fling with a SR4 right now.

It's hard to go wrong. Another thing you might consider is The World's Best Ever Stingray, the 30th Anniversary model - if you can find one. That "for sale" thread up there is always interesting!

The Bongo has its own character, and that's not what I'm after for the moment. Plus, I'm not quite attracted yet by them (but I happened to see a few ones that looked really nice). But I'm sure this will come.

Jack, the 30th anniv is also an option I consider.

Mark : did you read my first post ? I'm NOT asking for anyone to decide for me. As I wrote, I'll make the decision on my own. But suggestions and clues (i.e. the 30th anniv suggested by Jack) are always welcome.

Please consider this topic as being me giving my thoughts.

Any color is good because it's an SR4 and it sounds like an SR4. End of story

As far as the P / J neck comfort goes. I am very comfortable on a J neck, but loved the sound of the SR4. I do believe you can get used to anything.

You're right, Ken, but there is a principle that led my whole life : never sign a financial engagement without being sure I can face it.

At this time, I play in a cover band who has approx 20 gigs/summer. Plus some studio work (basically building bass and drums grooves for productions).

A new project is coming : maybe change of band, one wants me and has 40 gigs/summer. If I am engaged, I'll put a down payment for the SR4. If not, I'll wait until I'm sure I'll have the whole cash for it.

Now leaving you for today, going out for tonight's gig. Some miles to drive.

I have a rosewood neck on the SR5 and maple on the 4. I find them very different to play. I love the zingy twanginess on the maple, a lot of fun. The rosewood and SR5 tone is more mellow and mature, imho. I love both.

And +1 for single H SR4 maple neck in Trans Teal!... err, does that make me a forum outcast?
