I got home from another week out of town today, and the big guy actually seemed happy to see me. Had to get a photo...

That's an impressive tortoise you got there, Rex.

I never thought I'd say that to a man, but there you go.

How old is he/she?

He's 20ish, as far as the vet can tell. He'll just follow me around the yard when I am out there. Slowly, of course...

How did he turn up at your place?

You walked out one day, and there he was, suitcases in tow, and announced "I'm Home"

I have seen snapping turtles with ticks and leeches on the shell before.

Creepy as all get-out. That guy was cranky, too.

He doesn't bark much. He does make some weird grunts and groans in his sleep.

I have a horrible snapping turtle story I cannot share on-line.

Being from south Mississippi, I can tell you with some confidence that alligator snapping turtles are much bigger and much more fearsome looking than that young man.

Scary snapper stories? I do want to hear this.

Oh Rex he's fantastic!!! What's his name?

My friend in college had a huge old tortoise like that. It was the most therapeutic thing to feed him vegetables and listen to the crunching.
