Well, here we are guys. It is the weekend before the release of Octavarium. I have read many different opinions on this album. However, a majority of the opinions have been negative. You know what? I could care less. When Tuesday rolls around, I will be there bright and early to pick up my copy. I will listen, evaluate, and form my own opinion. I have stayed away from the downloads, and considering that my opinion is really the only one that matters, I have given no weight or credence to anyone elses views on Octavarium, either way.

One thing that I will say is that, I really don't forsee disappointment. Dream Theater changes from album to album. That is one of the things I have always loved the most about this band. So what if John has takes less solo's. So what if this isn't Images and Words Pt. 2. So what if there isn't endless jamming. It seems that so many people use these things as criteria for determining if a Dream Theater album is "great," that really they are over looking what essentially makes Dream Theater great. THE SONGWRITING! It's a shame that more of Dream Theaters so-called "fans" don't see this. This isn't directed at you guys. I guess I am just sick of all the negativity and speculation that I see elsewhere, thus I have been thrust into rant mode.

Anyway, people critisized "Six Degrees" "Train Of Thought" and Falling Into Infinity" and I loved those albums, so what do I know. It seems that no matter what Dream theater does, they can not win. Oh well. You know what they say: Those who can do. Those who can't become critics. :)

Well, I guess I am lucky. Because, I am completely stoked about heading out Tuesday to pick up my copy of Octavarium. Do you feel me?

Cheers,
Steve :)

Change is great, if they stayed the same they'd be boring. However, I didn't like Octavarium much. That's my opinion of it. Lots of people might buy it and love it. For me though, no. Besides, I'm pretty fussy about the Dream Theater stuff I do like. I'm not a huge fan, though I do like some of their music.

It's pretty much all over the internet, l have a copy of it, but only listened to the first track, there's nothing more satisfying then going to a music store and buying a new Dream Theater cd, getting in the car and cranking it.

Even though I'm the biggest fan of the band, Dream Theater albums have to grow on me. Maybe it's just me, but I owned Falling Into Infinity for two years before I really got into it. It's like I digest the music in slow increments and then . . . I really get into it. I'm waiting for that to happen with Train of Thought. I'm just now starting to get enough of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and am ready for something new.

I'm psyched about the tour, too, but I wish I could go to an Evening with Dream Theater playing for 3+ hours type show. The only way the come to Florida is part of a multi-band package tour, then you only see 45 minutes of them. They didn't come here in 2004 at all - (beware of ranting) The rock music market is stagnant down here because the ****** sewer grunge rock die-of-a-dark-shallow-heroin-overdose death radio stations down here that only play three chord sloppy overdistorted muddy mindless drivel. Never mind the redneck classic trailer rock stations - Lynard Skynard over and over and over and over and over ...... (rant over) You get the idea - I'll take all the Dream Theater I can get, even if it is a Co-Headlining package tour. I really loved Megadeth in the mid - late 1980's, but I don't have that angst anymore and don't resonate to that kind of music anymore. Maybe I'll show up for DT and leave afterward.

I'm jealous of Europe - they seem to get all the good shows and festivals now and we're stuck with the warped tour. :(

I'm with you on this one - I'll probably go to the Orlando Gigantour package, but could do without most of the other bands on the bill - I'll probably leave during Megadeth to beat the traffic

I wouldn't get too worried about it guys. I think Gigantour was merely an opportunity they couldn't refuse. I mean, if you think about it, they will get exposure to fan bases that wouldn't necessarily pick up on Dream Theater by any other means. I personally think it's great. I have always felt that bands like Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree deserved to have more exposure and success within the American market. I mean, these are truly "THE GREAT" bands of our time, and most don't even know about them. I am fairly certain that when Dream theater returns from their European tour, that America will see an "Evening with Dream Theater" tour. And when we do, I will be there, and it will be awesome! :)

I'm looking forward to it. Haven't heard anything except what was posted on the gigantour site. I will say something about the negative opinions that people have posted so far since I have had to deal with so many personally. Most of those were from kids. Nothing against the youth out there :), but when somebody posts "it sux, they sound like Mudvayne eating pudding pops!", I can't take that opinion very seriously. As a matter of fact, I rarely take any negative opinions very seriously since we're discussing something as subjective as music. But the opinions I've heard from musicians whom I respect have been very positive, so I'm anxious to give it a listen. :)
