I was watching HBO the other night and saw the movie/documentary "Metallica - Some Kind of Monster." When it came time for the band members to audition for a new bass player, Robert Trujillo chose a Ray 5-string to audition with. He ended up getting the gig (and was given a million dollar signing bonus). Anyway, it was cool seeing him play that Ray.

+1 , I own and regularly watch that DVD
it's great to look behind the curtain and see "the Wizard" :D and just see a really well done documentary, not to mention seeing Robert kick some butt!!

ps. I read that Audioslave hired the same therapist to get their issues resolved before the release of 'Out of Exile'...... I guess 40 Large a month does help a band play nice and listen to one another

While he has seemingly moved on to other axes for his "regular" arsenal, there was a time when RT played a lot of MMs. Good stuff!

As for SKOM, what can I say? I'm a sucker for comedy!

I watched that movie for the first time last week, it was an amazing insight into the band. Interesting when the new bass player sat down with the lawyer to discuss percentages he went from 5%-25%. I don't own any of Metallica's albums but I really enjoyed that movie.

the first time i EVER saw an EBMM bass (that i remember) was Rob Trujillo on the cover of bass player magazine with a blue SR5 (black pickguard - i think). that was maybe 93, 94 or 95. every since then i wanted an EBMM.

as i recall he auditioned using an SR5 thru an SVT 3 head w/ HI watt cabs and remember Lars saying something like "youve got a moster bass tone going there" :)

ps: not to be mean - but anyone else think that everyone else that auditioned was just really, really bad?

oh ya ... and the part w/ Dave Mustaine was crazy. dude was pretty bummed out.

Yeah, you would think that they would have gotten better players. I remember saying to myself "Self, sh*t, your ego says your better than them."

yep, Robert was head and shoulders above everyone else they showed, I was bummed to see that Eric Avery didn't play better... he's a huge influence of mine from his days with Jane's, but he just kinda blew it at the Metallica audition :(
[not entirely his bag i think,he went out on the road w/Alanis Morrisette after that i think]

I haven't seen the whole movie yet (came in around day 363ish), but I caught the bass auditions. Yeah, the other guys couldn't hang!

Robert put some meat into his playing, and had a presence (and tone) that could not be matched! And the fact that he grabbed the SR5 (Trans-Orange, if I remember correctly) from the stable of basses wasn't lost on me, either.

Just wondering...is there a Flea/Alanis Morrisette/Eric Avery/RHCP/Jane's Addiction rotation going on? And is Alanis going to step up to the mic for Anthony or Perry?

Come to think of it, imagine Perry singing "You Oughta Know!"...scary!

Metallica had kind of fallen out of favor with me (and millions of others I think) at the Load/Reload point, but I listened when I heard them on the radio, and read their interviews in the guitar/bass mags. I disliked St. Anger from the first listen, mostly from the standpoint of the drum sound. But I saw the movie at the store, remembered that I had read good stuff about it when it was initially released, and thought "What the heck" and rented it.

I was intrigued by how much I was drawn in to the movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, that my opinion of St. Anger marginally improved :).

I'm interested to see what an album with RT on board from the get-go would sound.

i REALLY wanted to like St. Anger ... i even lied to myself and said that I did. i loaned it to a buddy and never bothered askng for it back.

i too have lost interest in the newer Metallica stuff ... not cuz theyre HUGE or popular etc but cuz theyre not playing the stuff that made me fall in love with em. i mean, i respect them A LOT and will probably buy every new albuim they put out but only b/c im hoping they'll FINALLY play something i like.

but the fact is its their band and not mine ... and they can do what makes them happy.

aww dudes, :( , I had always "appreciated" what Metallica had done for metal but never have owned any of their CDs but then I heard the St.Anger single with that insanely live snare and absolutely fell in love with it. St.Anger was the first Metallica CD I actually went out and bought. I love the absolute rawness of the recording, sonically I think it's on par with Tool and Steely Dan in it's own right.

Followed them from their beginnings through the Black album - haven't paid much attention to them since then...

The only Metallica I own is the black album on DVD audio. The sound quality is so good it will scare you. While the St. Anger single is really interesting, I just think the album suffers from not having a proper bass player.
