Somebody should make a sticky for FAQ about maintaining your bass...

I have a new Sterling and I have a couple of questions.

1. Should I use some sort of an oil for the maple neck and fretboard to prevent the wood from drying out? if yes, what kind of oil?

2. What kind of EB strings does the Sterling H come with from the factory? (I am happy with them...I want to make sure I buy the same as backup)

3. What kind of cleaning or finishing product is safe to use on the finished body section of the bass?

4. How long does the 9V battery typically last?

5. Any other tips about maintenance I should know about?

Thanks...:)

Can't find Gunstock Oil

This is the suggestiong from the FAQ section for mainitaining the neck:

"An infrequent dose of gunstock oil will help to keep the neck maintained; we recommend and use Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil, but any good quality gunstock oil will work. Clean neck first. Use a small amount of Tru-oil, leave it on for 5 minutes, then wipe it off with a paper towel. Then apply Birchwood-Casey Gunstock Wax."

Well, I called two sporting goods stores (Bass Pro Shops, and LeBaron, another fishing/hunting shop) and neither carried any type of gunstock oil or wax. They suggested I use Linseed oil, which I would NEVER do in a million years. That would totally wreck the bass.

I tried to order the stuff on-line from this Birchwood-Casey place, but they wanted to charge an additional $55 for shipping and handling. Maybe because I am in Canada???

Anybody have any other suggestions for an oil for the neck?
