A Floyd without a locking nut? Even with the locking tuners, that things not going to stay in tune with heavy trem use... These guitars have cheap plastic nuts...

uh, ya... 'cause it's really easy to install a locking nut on a neck that was not designed or cut to take one... I mean, there's only the little issues of cutting the platform for the nut to sit on to the exactly the right height and distance from the bridge (oh, okay, that's picky - you probably have about a tenth of a millimeter of leeway you can play with in the height department), and then you just have to drill through the neck for the lock-nut bolts and hope the headstock doesn't fall off in the process! Real easy...

And that Floyd copy he mounted on it must be a piece of ****, judging from the price he paid for it...:p

You don't have to replace the nut with a locking nut. He was talking about replacing it with a good after market nut.

yeah i meant a good graphlon or some sort of graphite based nut. Floyd nut hahah yeah right... only for the ambitious.

speaking of that ... on a late night bought of insomnia a fellow guitar freak of mine decided to switch the standard strat trem on his fat strat to a floyd. I couldnt believe he did it... its not great but the mistakes are fixable.

i guess im just a punk for thinking its a good guitar anyways... i mean wasnt it EVH who said he doesnt believe in spending a lot of money on guitars? .... although i gave in and went against that gear philosophy but going all out on a petrucci model... i would definetly get an OLP that had those kind of customizations done to it... regardless of the problems that "could" happen. you know... come to think of it ...Carvin sells floyd guitars with sperzal locking tuners and i dont hear any complaints about thier tuning.... so... idk... whatever makes you feel more secure i guess.

oh yeah... and floyds are floyds... not all are equal but most copies are hold up pretty well... except maybe the ones you find on cheap hamers and the cheap TRS ones on old school ( before 2002) low to mid priced ibanez guitars. that one looks like a schaller type.. although im not 100%

God bless,

TOny

*********EDIT: looking back at teh pics that is definetly a Schaller Floyd. Those are good floyds my friend. And to be honest with you when i tried out a EB Axis... I.... and im kinda afraid to say this here but ... i thought THAT floyd (the musicman floyd) wasnt up to snuff with the schaller or an original for that matter.

i know ill have hell to pay for that one.....********** banned ? nah.. just chastized i guess...

Sorry if folks came across sort of aggresively. Honestly, I've never played an OLP so I wouldn't know how they really are. The impression that I got from the auction is that somebody bought the guitar, customized the hell out of it to get it up to his standards, and then ended up selling it because it didn't work as well as they expected.

Guess we're all a little snobby here. :)

I've only played the silo bass OLP. I can say it is quite amazing in playability for it's cost. There are small little flaws as one might expect. The high E saddle isn't quite lined up right which creates a slight deadening sound from the string. The pickup routs aren't perfect and the paint is... well, not Music Man quality. LOL

A friend of mine has ordered one of the Axis. He has PRS, Les Paul, a Tom Anderson... nice guitars and he loved my JPM7 so much he got to wanting a Music Man. However, he has expensive guitars as it is and his wife's not to keen on him getting another 900 plus dollar guitar. He was impressed enough with the Bari of Raymond's that he thought he Axis ought to at least be good with the same basic neck shape of the real Axis. I just told him he will be dissapointed in the difference in finish compared to what he loved about my Music Man.

After reading all that is posted, I will say I have one (OLP). I mainly use it as my travel guitar. In my line of work, I tend to go on the road quite a bit and to be honest, I would rather have a $200 dollar guitar that plays decent get broke, stolen, bashed, dinged and all the other "horrors" than one of my Petruccis. I got it specifically for the road. It is not the real deal by any stretch, but will do for me. You can get the one advertised and get the parts if you want, but to someone who can't afford a quality guitar, the OLP is a good starting point. That one would be worth their investment if it stays at below $300. Just my opinion.
