Hello there - I've got a simple question, but one for which I can't find a straightforward answer ( and I've got no access to Stingrays where I live) do the 5 string HH models sound like the 4 string HH models? (or rather, can they?) I've fallen in love with the sound of the Ed Freidland samples I've heard, but they were on a 4. As a five string player for preference, will I get roughly the same sound out of a 5, (ignoring my inferior playing, of course)
Many thanks to anyone who has or who has played both

Nope, totally different. SR5 has ceramic pickups and SR4 has alnico. The pre-amps are different too, not to mention differences in tone with different bodies.
The SR5 20th has alnico and is probably the closest you'll get to the 4 string.
I have not played one yet but have been salivating over some of the comments about the tone. BP say's it's the coolest SR5 made ever. Must stop this conversation now as I am getting GAS:rolleyes:

OK thanks for the info. I wonder how different they sound? I'm sure I'll still like it, but I'd better get a proper listen to a 5 before I grovel and beg my wife enough to let me buy one. If the 5 is very different from the 4, I would just have to buy the 4, even though I don't know how to play one anymore. Thanks Steve,
Mark

The Stingray5 will sound closer to the Sterling than Stingray4. I can't really comment on the HH models but having tried a HS, there are some really nice sounds to be had with the multiple PU configuration.

If you're willing to wait, I believe the Sterling 5 will be comming out at he summenr NAMM. It might be worth the wait, Big Poppa always has something intertesting up his sleeve......

You're right, the 20th aniversary Stingray 5 HH is the one that can get the sound of a HH Stingray 4, the regular SR5 HH sounds different.

Too funny Jon. :D I have been single now for 7 years and the only thing I have to do is be vaguely financially responsible. One of the perks of singleness is not having to deal with that wife issue when contemplating new gear. I never have to say "But honey, Poppa needs shoes"

Thanks for the advice guys. As for the permission versus forgivness thing, that would probably be true for most people, but in my case it's a "it's easier to ask first than to remove a SR5 from a body cavity" sort of situation! Cheers all, I'll see if I can locate a 20th Anniversary anywhere in this Godforsaken place.

That's sort of how it works at my house, too! :D
