Hi everyone. New 2010 model BFR Luke player here. Love the guitar. I am interested in hearing more about the SPC tone control option for the Luke. I read in another thread it ' Fattens " up the sound. Please tell me more. Is is easy to install and more importantly uninstall if I do not like it?

Thanks,

Jim

The question is do you really need that in a BFR Luke?

It's pretty easy to install but I don't know if EBMM is now using the solderless component in their Luke, if yes it's a piece of cake. if not you have a bit of soldering to achieve

another option is to swap the EMG85 with an EMG81 this is a pretty reversible mod. Ask Deano from Australia that is doing that to all his Lukes (including the BFR)

It's a nice mod, but it's not going to be an easy install. You'll have to get your soldering iron out and take a look at the Luke wiring schematic.

In the past I've installed an EMG 89 + Pull Pot + EXG. It was a lot of soldering work in a very small space. If you're not experienced with guitar electronics, best leave it to a tech. If you get it installed, I'd be curious to hear what you thought.

I liked the EXG, but I already have it installed on another strat so I returned it back to stock.

I loved the SPC on single coils in my strat (together with the EXG). Immediate fatness. Huge midboost, nice rounded tone, excellent for leads. Wouldn't hesitate to put em in a strat again. Don't know about the ease of installation though, it came in a preloaded Gilmour-pickguard.

Also, keep in mind that the SPC, EXG and RPC are basically little parametric EQ's that you can put into your guitar. I could pretty much duplicate the sound of the EXG on my Luke with an old TC Electronics parametric EQ + Sustainer, but you could probably use any high quality parametric to do the same.

I'd love to put a set into an Albert Lee SSS :)

Excellent info. Thanks. One other question. What is different in tone from a BFR Luke to a non BFR Luke? I saw a black non BFR on e-bay that looks nice. Mine is the Ruby Flame finish which is real nice.

I haven't A/B'd them but I'd guess the BFR would have more sustain because of the mahogany tone block. The maple top will also probably add a little brighter high end.

You'd have to try them both to really hear the difference.

I would too :). Most stunning AND versatile (they don't always go together ;) ) set of single coils I ever heared. Candy Apple Red AL with a beautiful full birdseye maple neck, trem+piezo and DG-20 EMG's: sounds like pure heaven to me :D

I have to say the CAR American Deluxe Strat with the maple V-neck I put it in was one bloody amazing guitar that made someone extremely happy when I sold all my gear years ago. Easily on par with most CS Strats I played. Underrated guitar in the Fender line-up it seems. People tend to go for the cheaper Standard or the more expensive RI's. After getting addicted to MM necks when I got out of guitar-retirement I'ld go SS or AL though ;)
