Anybody have any suggestions as to where I can find a Ernie Ball Splitter Box? I've been looking all over and can't seem to find one which I will want to have when my JPM comes into town. Thanks!

Alan, do you mind if I ask how you are planning to use it? Is it something specific to your JP? I'm really just curious. Other than allowing you to run a single cable from the guitar, it doesn't sound like it would buy you anything. The JP has two outputs, and if used with regular mono 1/4in cables, the magnetic and piezo signals are already separated. Maybe I'm missing something...

Again, just curious.

Mike,

The main use for said splitter box is for EBMM piezo-equipped guitars. The long & the short is that you can run a single stereo (TRS) cable from the guitar to the splitter and then wire the piezo and magnetic signals separately from there.

You are correct, the same can be done by utilizing both jacks on these guitars. So it's basically a matter of preferring one cable from your instrument versus two.

I've been meaning to order one of these splitters for months now, and I keep forgetting. I don't really need it.. I just want the option. ;)

You pretty much got it, Mike. My ideal situation is to be able to connect the guitar into two seperate amps: One designated for the Magnetic Coils and one for the Piezo Pickup. Ideally, I'd like to better use the piezo in a way that it would be more versatile to my sound rather than just plugging straight into my Mark IV and only using that as the main source. I really want to be able to mess with the EQ of a seperate amp so that I can be able to create my own sound while still using the original technology of the Piezo that's integrated into the guitar.

Most of the advice that I have gotten from people about using the Piezo when it comes to running a "seperate line" is that of people telling me to run the Piezo directly into the PA. The problem that I see with that is not every venue that we perform at will have a reliable enough PA for me to use. I would like to be able to have more control over what's coming from my instrument than that and not rely on someone else to EQ the "Acoustic" side of my playing. Versatility is paramount to good equipment, in my opinion, and the more that I can accomplish with what I have, then the more people will be pleased with our performances.

So, a Splitter Box will allow me to do just that: obtain greater versatility.

Steve, am I to understand that there's no need for a Y-cable to connect from the guitar to the Splitter Box and then another Y-cable from the Splitter Box to the seperate amps? Basically, you're saying that you need a single Stereo Cable to connect from the Piezo/Magnetic Jack into the Splitter Box and from there, hook up a Y-cable?

By the way, thanks for the info, Folks! I appreciate you're posting them here.

Alan,
Thanks - that's really what I suspected you wanted to do. Steve also helped confirm what I was thinking. You don't really NEED a splitter box to do what you want since the guitar has two outputs. If you use mono cables, one output sends the piezo only, and the other sends the magnetic signal. The advantage of using the splitter box is that if you plug a stereo cable into the magnetic/stereo jack on the guitar and split it later, you only need to run a single cable to the guitar. Check out the wiring diagram here:

Sorry EB folks - I'm not trying to cost you a sale by having this discussion. Just trying to make sure Alan understands all the wonderful design aspects of his new toy!!! :D

Alan,

You don't need any "Y" cables when using the splitter box. You can run a stereo (TRS) cable from the guitar to the box, and then run two separate mono (TS) cables from the box to your amps (one will get the piezo signal, and one will get the magnetic pickup signal).

You could also run two mono cables from the guitar jacks, sending the piezo signal to one amp and the magnetic to another, without the splitter box, as mentioned by MikeVt.

Alan,

What acoustic amp are you looking to get? I'm leaning towards the Fishman Loudbox. It won "Best Acoustic Amp '05" at the European music trade show (like NAMM, but bigger) and Guitar Player Magazine gave it an Editor's Pick Award. All the reviews say its very powerful and clear. I play MESAs too (Lonestar/F-100 combos).

I'm going to use the splitter to get from my effects to the amps. I'm also going to try out a Line6 PodXT Live to see how their effects sound. The ease of setup along with the recording/direct options are enticing. I don't use many pedals, so an "all in one" may be fine for me.

Slightly OT...What high quality, low capacitance Y-cables are out there being currently manufactured that are rugged and gig worthy (that is, not simply a studio "insert cable")?
Is there such a thing? I heard planet waves makes one but didn't find one online...

I don't know about a Y cable. I too looked at Planet Waves and Monster and didn't see anything. I'm going to get the EB stereo TRS cable. I noticed on my DVDs that Petrucci is using a stereo TRS cable for his guitars, not a Y.

I just received my EB Splitter today in the mail. Nice quality, like an MXR pedal. Very inexpensive too. It will be a nice option to have handy.

JP,

I'm not really sure which one I'm gonna pick up. I've been looking at a few of them, the Fishman being one of them. My situation demands that I be picky about it though only because the size of the amp is a factor for me. I've found one at the music store where I've ordered my JPM that would fit underneath my Mark IV while the Mesa is on it's stand. I may have to chose that one, but until I get the guitar and use it to test out the piezo with different amps, I'm not gonna make a decision about it. Better later than sooner and disappointed, you know?
