I finally did it. I purchased a classic today and will have it next week. Flats or rounds is the question. Would like flats but dont want to sacrifice growl. So I may go nickel rounds. Any thoughts or suggestions for stinging a classic?

You won't lose the growl!......You may lose a bit of brightness, but that can be equalled out if you use EB Cobalt Flatwounds.

I agree with Rod. Play what's on them, let them break in for several weeks until the zing goes away. You may wind up actually liking them. Then, if they're not working out, start checking out alternatives.

Joe mentions he waited a long time for this ax.
He mentions flats or nickel wound almost in the
"same breath". I'm suspecting it's not an issue
of zing, but of treating the frets more kindly on
his "new baby".

Yes, I'm reading between the lines and may well
be wrong, but it would be best to hear from Joe !

Joe ?
