I was inspired by Travis's (ebmuscmanlvr83) thread about a SR5 neck trade, so I figured I'd check here to see if there's any interest.

I have a SR5 with a maple-fingerboard neck. I would like to see if I can trade it for an unlined fretless neck. It must be unlined.

The neck, as far as I can tell, is in perfect condition. It does, however, have a Hipshot D-tuner installed on the E-string. It came to me this way and I would like to remove it and keep it for the new neck. I don't believe that the D-tuners leave any extra screw-holes, though if I'm wrong, someone please correct me!

I actually traded my SR5 for a lined Jazz Deluxe Fretless. The Jazz didn't do the tone I was looking for, but I heard a fretless SR5 live which sounded incredible and I recently played an unlined fretless bass that's got me GASing like crazy. I don't have the money to buy another bass, so I figured I might try trading necks. I'd like an ebony fingerboard (which neither EBMM nor Fender offer), but I'm willing to give pao ferro a try.

I can take close-up pics of the neck too, if desired. Please contact me via email at [email protected] if you're interested. I have Pit and TalkBass references, if needed or desired.

Edit: Just to clarify something, the Hipshot Bass Xtender is in fact on the E-string and the bass is strung BEADG. Hipshot makes a Bass Xtender with a raised lever so as to not interfere with the B-string tuner. Offical word here (see entry #13).

Strange. A 5-er with a detuner. Do you actually use it? Just curious about the novelty of it.

No neck to trade otherwise.

Well, it came this way when I got it. I definitely feel that there are some songs, most especially when the guitars are in drop-D tuning, that it comes in handy. I haven't used it much personally, though.

I hope that someone might've tried an unlined fretless and they'd rather have something different. I can hope. For me, with my last fretless, the lines are too much like subtitles to a movie - I can't stop looking at them, but then I'm not really developing my intonation (kinda like how I miss half the movie while reading subtitles). Nearly half the time, I play a double bass in my university orchestra. Unlined just feels like home to me.

well said, unlined boards may appear more difficult
but I find the side marker dot inlays useful/sufficient.
i have a long way to go improving my intonation
but i've impressed myself over the last week (not
having owned a fretless bass before last week).

Similar to you, i played the violin growing up and
lines seemed wierd to me.

'05 SR4 Fretless LE Piezo: Buttercream/Tort/Pao Ferro
How are you liking it? How's the tone? I'm curious as to how Pao Ferro is as a fretless board. I've heard it's nearly as hard as ebony (maybe even harder or more dense). I think what really held back my last fretless was the rosewood fingerboard. So, I'm hoping for a trade (!) and that I'll love the tone. I did hear a fretless SR5 live once (through an Eden rig - and I run a Metro) and the thing just totally killed. I would've died for that tone.

darn - i was just ready to submit my reply
and power failure ocurred .. it's rained for
a week straight in the nyc area . .sucks

I'm enjoying the FL alot but I'm sorry to
say that I can't give you a compartive
between ebony & pf because this is my
1st fretless. The tone is great, the piezo
approaches a nice upright acoustic sound
but I like a 50/50 blend, I find notes carry/
sustain a bit better.

The pao ferro board is nice, harder & clearly
more dense than rw . .can't comment on ebony
tho. Good luck on your neck quest
