Well I went to Atlanta today to make a swap with a fellow member of the dudepit today. I traded my sterling for one of the sweetest SR5's ive ever came across. Its a 92 model with one of the most intense birds eye maple neck ive ever seen. Its also a see thru blonde color which ive always wanted! I feel like I made out like a bandit on this deal. The only problem its got which im gonna try to do a search on is that 2 of the tuning keys are loose. When I say loose I mean that the clover its self is loose from the shaft. . Im thinking maybe I can tap them with a brass hammer or something to fix them but I dont know what holds these pieces together. Any way tell me what you guys think!!

John

It is the same guy. (1bassplayin I think is how he spells his screen name) He bought the bass new in 92 and told me that everything was original on it. Ive never seen a blond SR5 before (although im sure that there common) and just fell in love with the thing. It has a very good feel to it. Its alot lighter than my old SR5 which is great for my back! :D

ok ok i did a search and couldnt find the answer I was looking for regarding repairing the tuners. Its not a big deal I guess it just drives me nuts when im playing unplugged or with the volume turned down low because they rattle when I play. I just cant figure out how the clover is attached to the shaft of the tuner. It doesnt look as if there is any kind of epoxy of anything used to hold them in nor does there appear to be any kind of pin that holds them in place. I can only assume that when they're assembled that it has some form of snap that holds them in place and that years of turning the keys have loosened them up. I guess I should quit being so darn cheap and just order a new set from EB. But if there is any way around that and these are easlily repairable, any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

John

It does look like that in the pics, but in person it looks like the blonde finish they put on telecasters. Could the color be told by the serial # its 52914.

Watching you play on it yesterday lets me know it went to a good home and some good tunes will be played on it.

John,
Congrats - I had the same issue with (2) of my tuners
on my '92 - the rattling is an ez fix. I pulled the clover
off the tuner arm and carefully bent the very bottom of
the clover (part that inserts into the arm). I bent it very
little using needle-nose pliers and used a soft cloth not
to damage/scratch the clover. Re-insert the clover
into the arm - if it is still not a tight fit, bend a bit more
I'm not sure this is the best way to handle this issue
but it worked out great for me and they're as good as new.
It does not bend the entire clover; it improves (tightens) the
fit of the clover in the arm. Best of luck.

BTW, I love my '92 - also has beautiful birds-eye & I really
like the finished neck.

Got lots of comments on the bass last night. All good :D I forgot how nice and easy the Sterling is to play. Gonna slap some new strings on it ASAP. Thanks for the trade; I'm going to have to pop in here more often.

Keith

BTW the color on the SR5 is butterscotch blonde no longer avaiable from EB as far as I know...,

Thanks for the info! How did you pull the clover off of the arm?

Thanks

I have always thought that SR5 was one beautiful mofo.

BTW, welcome, Keith!

I'd like to hear what Jon has to say about fixing the loose ears on that bass.

Never had to do it myself, so I dunno.

Ebbyboddy happy!

Yeah it would be great if jon would pop in here with his advice. I was gonna PM him about it because of fear of rehashing an old thread somewhere but you cant PM him anymore. (which is understandable, I bet he gets flooded with questions).
:D .

John,

I pulled off the clovers by hand like a beast of a man.
If they're loose, they will come off pretty easily. It was
so ez I wish I could do it for ya.

Again, @ the bottom of the clover where it inserts into the arm,
there is a small split. Just bend one side next to the slit very little
& that should create enough friction to keep the fit tight in the arm.

I'm horrible @ putting this to paper so just pull one off - it will become
extremely clear what to do.

I have never seen this problem so I won't be much help here. If it were mine, I would just replace the tuner.

Thanks to Lord Bongo for the heads up here :D
