I sit on the board for a Non-Profit and we are currently making arrangements for a black-tie Cancer Awareness fundraiser. One of my tasks is working with the entertainment.

This evening I was reviewing one group's rider and researching companies that provide backline. As I was mousing around their website, I went to this page: Guitars and Basses | Bergsten Music Inc.

Imagine my surprise to see this photo (Look closely at the SR5) ...

I've never seen this before -- I'm sure there is a very interesting story behind how it got this way.

In the early 70s, we all - ALL OF US, DO NOT LIE - began to modify our basses. You there, Mister Brass Nut, don't even PRETEND you didn't do that to your P bass! And those of us who had P basses, and THAT WAS ALL OF US, don't try to tell me otherwise, had to do certain things. It was the law of the land.

Like giant, evil termites wielding opposable thumbs, we gnawed holes into the bodies and installed J pickups at the bridge position.

I did it. You did it. We all did it.

Clearly, whoever made these mods is either (a) about my age or (b) is romanticizing about how great those days were, even though they weren't born yet. Which is fine. I mean, I think that if I wanted a PJ, I'd just get a PJ and be done with it, but who am I to question the neuroses of another? I have my own, clearly.

Maybe what this Giant Evil Termite ended up with suited him perfectly.

Far be it from me to question what led him down this dark, spooky path.

3) Dudley had a weak moment and spun out a PJ SR5 one-off prototype.... But being ashamed of what he did drove it out to the desert and buried it. Only many years later it was unearthed by a Tahitian archeologist while searching for the long fabled gigantic wombat-ligerosprous and given to his soon to be father in law as a dowry payment. With his new found wealth and only daughter out of the house he moved to the USA with the sole dream of opening up a backline rental business.

....... Nah..... I didn't think so either.

that must be a rare instrument! Its like taking a top of the range sports car and swapping the engine for a base model one. Id love to know the reasoning behind the mod . . . .

I puked in my mouth a little bit after seeing that. I see another SR5 headstock in the background. I hope that one was left untarnished.

Funny... I have a Jazz that I've modified to function like and resemble a particular EBMM I am very fond of. ;)

well if that person who modded the bass feels he got what he wanted i dont see a problem with that.
after all, it was his bass and he should feel free to do whatever he wanted to it..

on a personal basis though, i would never modify any of my eb basses.. ;)

I guess if somebody really wanted the look and feel of the SR5 but preferred the sound of a PJ, they could do that. Whatever works, but not something you see very often.
