Hi guys!
I love my St Vincent HHH: the neck, the shape, the balance are perfect IMO, my favourite guitar.
That said, I have always found the original wiring a bit weird and a bit dark.
I mostly play pos 5, which, if I understand the wiring on the official page, is neck humbucker in series + bridge humbucker in series IN PARALLEL, and, for what I understand, out of phase with each other.
I also like pos 3 which is neck humbucker alone alone in series, and pos 1 which is just the bridge humbucker in series, in theory at least...
And I say in theory, because, as you all know, the wiring is built around a superswitch and a pcb, and I suspect there is more going on than what things it looks like.
I tried swapping the original dimarzios for a set of 4 wire firebird style pickups, soldering them precisely as the dimarzios were on the pcb and there are massive phase issues and wild volume differences.
I am not electronics litterate enough to measure what the original pcb + superswitch exactly did, but I suspect some interactions between the middle pu in pos 5,2 and 1, you just hear one of the coils when tapping the pu with a screwdriver.
I just want to get that pos 5 (neck humbucker in series + bridge humbucker in series in parallel out of phase with each other) and something similar to the St Vincent "goldie" layout. St. Vincent Goldie
I know some of you have tried similar mods without the help of the pcb and with different pot values.
Please share your knowledge: there is virtually nothing own the web about triple mini humbuckers/firebird style setups.
Thanks in advance!
