Sweat stained maple fretboard

hello all, i'm a new member and i'm sure this has been posted before but i'd love a definitive answer
i've just picked up a lovely stingray but it has a stained maple board, whats the best way to get it back as best as possible? 000 steel wool, 3M pads, tru-oil? anybody actually done it? any tips would be greatly appreciated.

stained, as in someone put a stain on it? or stained as in sweat and dirt stained?

First, I could get some lemon oil or ernie ball wonder wipes and go to town on it. that should help get out surface dirt. If that doesn't help, then it sounds like it is time for some Murphy's oil soap.

Does the paint have a gloss finish or the tru oil/wax treatment?

A good cure for dirty spots where the finish is gone is the chlorox stick you can buy at CVS. Bleach carefully, about seconds for starters, then moving up as needed. After getting the color back to default seal with clear coat.

I kind of shy away from lemon oil myself. Sometimes it's actually mineral oil with lemon "flavor".
The murphy's oil soap works well enough, though I do use Dunlop fretboard cleaner sometimes.
