Sterling 4/5 vs ceramic Stingray 5 preamp

Hi all. I have a 2000 Stingray 5 and I just picked up a 2008 Sterling 5 fretless. Are the preamps in these the same, at least electrically? Also my 2000 Sterling 4’s preamp looks completely different from the Sterling 5’s. Wondering if there’s an authoritative history of preamp revisions to the Sterling line and what the sonic characteristics of each are? Thanks!
