All,

I have owned and loved a single H Sterling 4 (American) for a number of years. It's strung with Ernie Ball flats and is the only bass I play at gigs--in a 7-piece folk-rock band, a 3-piece folk trio, and a 5-piece Turkish group. Recently I had an opportunity to purchase a nearly-new Sterling HS strung with roundwounds. It's a beauty, lightweight, and has incredibly fast action.

At home, it's fun to explore the wide range of tone settings provided by the additional neck pickup. I especially like using all coils because of the enhanced note thickness and volume consistency across the strings.

However, on gigs, I'm finding the Single H (series) setting does the job best---just as it does on my other bass. I use a wireless during sound checks in order to get an idea of how the bass sounds from the audience's perspective and with others playing. The all-coils setting is just not as articulate as the single H and tends to get a bit lost. Granted, the bass is still quite new, and I haven't explored the bass, middle, and treble knobs completely. I have no problem using both basses with the same configuration--the flats and roundwounds provide nice variation--but I wondered whether some of you HS owners have other settings that work well on gigs.

Thanks,

John

Increase the height difference between the H and the S.
Raise the H PU as far as is reasonable [judge it by ear],
and then lower the S PU, possibly as far as it will go, to
reduce its influence in the "All-3-Coils" PU mix. This will
get you the note fattening effect of including a neck PU,
yet preserve note clarity.

Also, tilt the S PU so it's lower on the bass side, as neck
PUs can deliver a rather boomy sonic image of notes on
the bass side of the string set.

Oyez ! My advice above does NOT produce a balanced HS.
Every switch position has a different output level for sure.
However, it DOES result in a really nice full house 3-coil,
as well as an equally nice 2nd and 5th position [front pair
of coils only, and bridge PU only]. Acoarst the rear SC is
still "normal" [abnormal IS normal for that beastie ... ]. I
just don't tend to solo the neck PU cuz it's tilted, but I'm
OK with that.
