Hey all,

as a newbie who has limited knowledge of Music Man basses (but always learning!), I need your opinions. A friend of a friend is selling his Sterling 4Hp in trans orange, maple board with matching headstock. It's in great shape. He wants $1000 for it. I love the feel of sterlings and am really looking for a dual pickup bass. I've never played a piezo-equipped bass though, and I'm not sure how often I'd use it. Piezo users: what do you love about having the piezo sound in your arsenal? How does it sound for rock or jazz?

Also, is $1k a fair asking price for this bass?

Thanks all.

The piezo is very cool addition to any EBMM basses, hear the difference here:

As for the price, I couldn't tell u are you talking about Canadian dollars?

You stated that you are looking for a DUAL pickup bass. If what you really want is a dual pickup bass, then this may not be the bass for you - just trying to give you a different perspective to help you make the best decision possible.

That being said, the piezo option is about a $300.00 up-charge if you buy brand new, so $1K is a pretty fair price depending on condition/age etc. Anything below $1k on that bass, especially with the piezo option, would be an exceptional deal.

As far as sound in a Rock or Jazz situation all I can say this: The piezo option will give you a certain presence to the tone if used judiciously (as you can hear from the sample clip above). I've always felt that there are no rules - most people think there has to be a 'rock' or 'jazz' tone, but that's not the case. If the tone works for the song, then so be it - no matter what that tone is. People tend to box themselves in thinking they need a certain tone for a certain 'style'. I don't believe that. Also, it's nice to have the option, even if you don't use it all the time.

I really like trans-orange (wish it was still offered), but that's subjective.

With out seeing it, it sounds like a good deal to me and at that price i doubt that you would loose anything on it if you decide to move it on in the future.
