Hi there folks,

I have a gorgeous red HS Sterling which I love to bits. The only thing I'd like to change on it is the switching. The series H sounds great (meaty and growly), as do the other pickup combos, apart from the H single coil mode, which sounds ok, but never gets used. I'd love to replace that switching option with H parallel instead, but keep all the other modes exactly as is (i.e. awesome).

Has anyone done that? Is it doable?

Cheers,

Dave

I had temptation to do something like that when owned Sterling 5 HS before, ...but after long thinking I quit!

Sold that bass like it was at the first place (original setup) to my mate who's in the same wedding & party gig business!

The switching on the HS involves both the switch itself and the PCB board for the preamp. You might want to contact customer service to see if they have an easy way to accomplish this.

If I remember correctly, the pickup is wired in parallel on the HS. Series on the HH.

Nope, ...only when all coils are ON (center switch position) bridge H in series works in parallel with S pickup, which is also in series with phantom coil! (coils 1+2 & 3+Phantom, ...+ = series, ...& = parallel)

It may simply not be possible without completely redoing the switching electronics. I should also mention that the the single coil selection is one of the biggest reasons people go for the HS as opposed to the HH or H. It may not have the output power of other selections but it has a much rounder open sound that is great for vintage style playing. I would just learn to live with it.
