I am buying a eb but Don't know which to get. I have played for several years and am looking for a real tight string sound. Sort of like tool. Which bass is better?

I don't have a sterling, but I have now, and in the past have had several, SR5s. I believe that the SR5 sounds very similar to the sterling. To me, the SR5 in parallel mode has a more glassy high end -- more hi-fi -- than the Stingray 4. The Stingray 4 has a very slightly more old school tone, with more lower mids and a smoother top end. I think they both sound tremendous, however. Aside from the sound, the sterling has a smaller body and thinner neck. My vote is for an SR5 if you are only going to have one EB bass. Otherwise get one of each ;)

I don't know anything about the guy from tool, but I think you will be very happy with any of the EB basses.

I can get the "Schism" sound on my Sterling. Also go to my website & here my band playing "Sober" to get an idea of what a Sterling sounds like. Although I am a finger player I use a pick on that particular song.

i have both but if i could have only one it would be the Sterling

click on the links below (in my sig.) to hear my sterling in the studio. i used the same tone thru all the songs but the sterling, especially with the 3 way pup switch, has a great range

Also... if you can demo a Sterling with a piezo, you should do so.
I know some of the folks on this forum are not big proponents of piezos, but I love ‘em. They are not for everyone- but maybe for you…

i have a Sterling........and my bro-inlaw has a Stingray........

both very nice but.........i gotta say the Sterling is the ticket.

play 'em both and pick the one that feels the best.......

Do you think the above characteristics are what I am describing in this thread?

Difference between my Sterling and Stingray.
