I'm new to the forum and apologize if I'm asking a question that's been answered 100 times before. I recently purchased the Sterling SUB Ray 4. It sounds great for the money. I want to buy a Music Man hardshell case for it. According to some of the music store websites the model number for a Sterling is 5981, whereas the case for the Sting Ray is 4860. I then read from someone who bought the 5981 that it's not made for the SUB basses rather the higher end Sterlings and won't fit into the 5981. Does anyone know the answer to this one? I'd really appreciate it.

I don't know for sure, but since you have a really cool name, I'll try to help. The Ray4 is based on the Stringray, so I'd go with the 4860 which is made for the Stingray.

I recently bought a Sub Ray5, love it, and got a gig bag used from the same store for $15. Hardshell would be nice, but I'm more a guitar player, so the bass is mainly for home use.

Good luck, and sweet name!

My understanding is the same as douglasspears, tho the Ray4 is not exactly the same shape as a US made Stingray it is close enough.
I have sold off all except 2 hard cases and opted for MM Gig Bags.

4860 Hardshell Case

4860 will be the best fit of the Music Man cases

I'm also looking for a hardshell case for my Sterling S.U.B. Ray4 bass. Where can I purchase a 4860 case? I've looked online, guitar center, musician's friend, amazon etc.

Thanks

I have an Ernie Ball Music Man SUB 4. The 4980 case fits perfect.

The 5981 is too small. Do not make the same mistake I did buying that one first.

Cheers!
