that's not true, If you think punk takes a lack of talent you are extremely off base (no pun intended or noticed).

While i can't speak for every "punk" band out there, good punk bands that are actual punk have very intricate bass lines, while the guitar is fairly simple to allow for the aggressive styling of the vocals (conflicting ranges, technical guitar parts get jarbled with vocals), the bass is free to roam and generally does a damn good job. Bassist in a punk act is usually the most important part, because it's providing the drive and providing the melody of the song while the guitar plays the rhythm.

If anything punk is more challenging for a lot of bassists because you almost take more of a lead role.

like i said, not all punk bands follow this formula, but many do, and those are the good ones..

besides, don't knock till you've tried it (and if you have tried it...umm..knock away?)

Joel,

My post was only pure devilment, brought on by excessive boredom at work today and I felt like annoying someone.

I knew someone would spring to the defence of Punk if I made a contentious comment!

OK, now I have got you talking, (and now I am being serious) what is the definition of modern day punk?

I was a little bit too young to be playing when the original UK punk era of the 70's came about, (I accept that the New York Dolls may have got there first) but punk then turned to "New Wave" in a couple of years and punk was gone.

The first band I learnt every song on the bass was "The Jam", who had started off in 1977 as a semi punk band, but morphed in a few short years into a main stream rock band. Their bass player was also Mr Busy because of the stripped down sound of a three piece, so I know all about 100 mile an hour bass lines.

So convince me that Punk has not been dead for the last 25 years!

I figured as much, i don't take anythign too seriously if i don't have to, i just figured some people would get ornery <sic> (because of their madula ablangada).

I'm in no way a punk scholar.

In fact, if you were to ask me to name 6 punk albums that came out in the 90's, I couldn't even do that.

I know great groups that you can attribute different levels of punk to, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedy's, Sicko, some Jawbreaker, NOFX. The list could go on, but i couldn't...

yeah. It's all bass, if only so many punk acts didn't play P basses the world would be better...

ok jub, this is how you do it.
on your bass: make sure the selector knob is set with both coils on(to resemble the stingrays configuration). than grab a pick(sorry dude but thats how it goes). slinkies help, its what i use and they work great.

on your amp: first cut the mids, make sure to do this first, it helps alot, i learned that trick the hard way. cut them until you are satisfied with the sound. then boost the bass till you get enough boom, then the treble till you get enough clarity, or bite if thats what you prefer.

Actually, I found that mids help in a punk band setting. I used to go for that mid-scooped sound before, but then realized while it sounded great playing solo, it got drowned out in a band setting. Mids are what help you cut through the mix. Add a little preamp gain in that, and you got a nice gritty punk tone.

on my sterling, i crank everything on my bass to 10, volume, low mid, and high, and i put the pickup selection on the stingray sounding one (furthest from you) this gives me plenty of punch

All this tak about bassists being the most important part of a punk band, what about drums. sure, its extremely fast, loud, and fast. You have to use a lot of strength to make the drums that loud. And that means pulling your arm back, which means you have to move faster. Which means difficult.

Also, imagine a punk band without drums. Where is the drive?

Just my thoughts.:D

Also, imagine a punk band without a marimba.

It would be like a day without sunshine.

And a day without sunshine would like.....well, night.
