oooh, this is too hard, actually impossible- my favorites change over time, and is generally a function of how new the music is. When Southern Steel came out, my favorite songs were on it. When Stressfest came out, my favorite songs were on that, etc.

All things being equal, off the top of my head I'd say my "all time" favorites are (in no particular order)

Ghostwind - just a beautiful composition
Foreign Exchange - real unique tune
On the Pipe - awesome groove, great melody lines
Tumeni Notes - jaw-dropping alternate picking
Runaway Train - all around jaw dropping
Natural Flow - I love the feel in this tune
Endless Waves - see Natural Flow

and that's just SMB. I'd have to make a separate Dregs list.

Coincidentally, I'm listening to California Screaming as we speak.

Highland Wedding
Tumeni Notes
User Friendly
Simple Simon
Sleaze Factor
Southern Steel
Collateral Damage
Sacred Ground
Stressfest
Brave new World
Wages of Weirdness
Aftershock
The Bash
Cruise Control
Ionized

These are just a few. God, I could go all day. I also love the Dregs covers of Zappa's "Peaches En Regalia" from California Screaming and Zeppelins "Kashmir" from Bring 'Em Back Alive.

they change over time for me too but the one I have tended to sight as my favorite the longest is "simple simon" from southern steel...

I always got a kick out of the chorus part and the whole songe just has a relitivly fun, loose feel while still being harmonically tight... if that makes any sense

Vista Grande

The first SMB song that I found a good backing track for so I could play it live. I don't have Dave and Van to help me out.

NorM-
Is the "Vista Grande" backing track available anywhere commercially? I'd love to get a hold of it and any others that might exist. Google didn't unearth anything.

Never heard of the guy. ;)

Actually, mine changes from time to time like a previous post here mentions.

But EYES OF A CHILD, VISTA GRANDE, THE GREAT SPECTACULAR, and the classical piece on UNSUNG HEROES (can't remember the name  ) always get the repeat treatment right after hearing them.

Hm, Sometimes I feel Like screaming is a very good Morse tune, together with the Well dressed guitar and Contact lost (although three Deep Purple songs).

As for his solo work, I have to give them another spin in the near future.

Now that these are down I'll have to go back to the backing track websight and figure out what I would like to do next.
Suggestions?

I've always liked "Highland Wedding"... especially done live.

I was listening to that this morning. It's tough but now I have a goal. I'll go get it now.

I think the classical piece is "Go For Baroque." It's either that, or "Flat Baroque." Anyway, it's one of those, and the other one is the last tune on "Coast to Coast." I guess I could go look at the discography on his website, but speculating is much more fun.

Yeah! it's GO FOR BAROQUE.

Love how it's written for git, bass, violin and keys...and they all come in at different times as the song progresses.

I'm still waiting for him to write one called BAROQUE ON THE WATER.

Collateral damage, aftershock, cut to the chase, sleeveless, ghostwind, country colors and all the country barnburners, most dregs tunes...to name a few. Of all the contemporary instrumental guitarist I find SM the most melodic, rhythmic and soulful and have no problem listening for hours. Most others kindof bore me after a short period. However, for all his great compositions, there are a good handful of "clunkers" in that he recycles lines to no great effect. Nobody is 100% perfect and his greatness far outweighs the lesser efforts. I recently saw him (the dregs) live and they did a version of Kashmir that was to die for. Outstanding. The whole concert blew the tops of my bandmates heads of. I was ginnin' a mile wide. This was the first time they saw them.
Personally, I don't care for his playing in Deep Purple. To me, its like oil and water. I find his style does not mix at all with the music. To me, DP is the Ritchie Blackmore vibe and no other.

I think your comment about Steve recycling lines is an interesting one- to my ears, you're right in the sense that sometimes I'll hear the same (or very similar) licks in different places, but I'm not sure I can think of an example of one that turns a tune into a "clunker"- can you provide an example of what you're thinking about? actually, wait: how about the main riff in "User Friendly" and it's slowed-down counterpart in "Native Dance"? Regardless, I like both tunes...

Steve is so far and away my favorite guitarist/musician that he could just play the same thing over and over and I'd probably still like it. Even in some of my "less favorite" songs, there is always something I find that I like. For the longest time I never listened to the album "Stand Up" (too many vocals!) ...but recently I went back and listened to "Distant Star", which I remember hating when I was younger, and, through Eric Johnson's vocals and all (don't get me wrong, I don't think EJ has a bad voice, but...it's vocals!) there are a couple of really choice morsels in there.

As for DP and his earlier work with Kansas (and newer work with Living Loud, etc...) maybe I'm really missing out, but...vocals!
