Hello!

I'm thinking of ordering these Steve Morse instructional videos.

[ame=http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007NFL7M/qid=1120476195/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_3_1/702-4122955-2720032]http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007NFL7M/qid=1120476195/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_3_1/702-4122955-2720032[/ame]

Anyone has seen them and could provide any comments/criticisms?

Thanks

I have the "Highlights" DVD. Its a nice package and I would suggest starting there. For $20, you can see if his teaching style works for you. I happen to have a nice personal library of instructional materials because I've been collecting them for years. The best package I could recommend is the John Petrucci "Rock Discipline" DVD and his "Wild Stringdom" book/CD pak. Its so good, I upgraded from the VHS and spent another $50 for the DVD because its so much easier to work with.

Other book/CD standouts: Greg Koch "Hal Leonard Blues Guitar Method," Dimebag Darrell's "Riffer Maddness," "Hal Leonard Jazz Guitar Method," Fred Sokolow "Roots of Electric Blues Guitar," all of Steve Vai's "Naked Vamps," Joe Satriani "Guitar Secrets" (book only), and most of the Signature Licks series.

I hope this helps.

I've also got the Highlites DVD and I've also seen one or two of the others. Great if your a SM fan, but IMHO not the best instructional DVDs.

If you're looking for technique videos, that one is great! Lots of good drills, exercises, etc. The Frank Gambale ones are great for scales, modes, etc. too.

Thanks Guys

I will look into the JP instructional video. I really like SM stuff but I'm looking for a good instructional video with useful exercises and techniques...

Though I will say I really like the Steve Morse Highlights, and both of Eric Johnson's DVDs are well worth the price of admission... All this stuff is fairly advanced, however... Relative beginners could do far worse than try Doug Marks' Metal Method - I've looked at it and think it's a great series; I wish I'd had access to it when I was starting out...

I think the 2 Morse videos were being packaged together in 1 DVD also.

Good stuff, but more for fans like mentioned. He explains rig, working through difficult parts, etc.

If you're a big fan of Steve's, it might pay to spend the money on his new DVD from the 1978 Montreaux show. But I went to Tower Yesterday, and they don't have it yet.

i started playing in 1964. my chops got real good real quick. after about 4 years of playing.....my chops were at peak developement of my selftaught abilitys . ya know.......pretty good.......and good enough for me to be a pro and all.....and i coasted along chop wise til i saw mr. morse in 79 or so & quickly (VERY QUICKLY) realized that as good as i was......i had slouched off on my chops , and that i had simply become a big fish in a small pond.
:D
when i FINIALLY got powerlines......i did steve's mode exercises for about a year. my chops vastly improved . and when i got the other videos.....and focused on string crossing........i advanced alot more again. i feel his approach to the guitar is second to none as far as technique....and how to disipline yourself. steve has an amazing ability to identify a problem area........simplfy it......and work it out til it is no loner a problem.
summing up....i'd highly recomend all his instructuional stuff...HIGHLY .
i think it's a very small price to pay for how useful they are. the same for eric j. & john pet. ( what a f...... monster he is technique wise !!!). i wish i had all this stuff availible to me when i was 23 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Tommy- I've never seen Power Lines (but I've seen the others). Is it similar to them?

no......it's alot more fretboard & postion playing technique oriented. very cool modal playing & instruction !!!!! i got alot out of it myself. this video led me to some serious shedding.........even to tennis elbow at one point. be careful....it took me a while to recover. you can over do it !!!!
i wish it was available on dvd. it's been years since i've watched it.....but now i'm thinking to do it today......
i also incorporated steve's modal studies w/ frank gambale's & came up w/ a really cool modes system i use to use ALOT to teach impro. hopefully someday i can make a little book on it .

I'd love to find a copy on VHS ... I'll find it one day I'm sure. That's a glowing review- tennis elbow and all ;)

> came up w/ a really cool modes system i use

Nice! The patented TinD modes system. Somebody get over there with a video camera, quick! (Or sign me up for a copy of the book.)

everyone is too a.a.d.d. to practrice in this day & age !! myself included. i really believe it's the biggest hurdle of them all to guitarist !!!!!!
i would try medication.....but the last thing a guitarist needs to take is speed !!!!!
