I started out with Southern Steel followed by Coast to Coast. Still my faves and lots of heavy guitar on 'em. I still crank up the volume to "Sleaze Factor" enough to peel the paint around here.

But- he's pretty versatile, so you're going to get chicken picken and classical on just about everything. His style is a blend of different genres, regardless of how much gain he's playing with. Steve is the MASTER.

I'd start with High Tension Wires, StressFest, Southern Steel, and Major Impacts, Split Decision, also highly recommend Dixie Dregs Bring 'em back alive. That's a lot of albums, but he has made a lot of good music!

Dixie Dregs had Jordan Rudess I believe.

^Great keyboard player from DT^

Wasn't Steve Morse in Dixie Dregs. Correct me if I'm wrong

If you like the heavier stuff go with Southern Steel and Coast to Coast to start off with. There are some mellow stuff too, but based upon what you said you like, those would likely be the most accessible to you.

If you like heavy sounds, I recommand "Perpandicular" with Deep Purple.
After that, "coast to coast" (solo album). ;)

T. Lavitz is the keyboardist for the Dregs~

Lots of info on Steve, the Dregs, etc. at his website s t e v e m o r s e . c o m

I'd echo what Beej and paranoid said: Southern Steel and Coast to Coast are great places to start if you like the heavier sounding stuff.

For the Dregs, I'd recommend starting with "bring em back alive"

Personally, I'd start with "The Introduction".

It's a very nice and smooth segue from the Dregs to him as a solo artist. You still hear a lot of dregs influence but much more guitar work than with the dregs. I love all the albums. That's just the one I would start with.

Just a warning....if you're expecting heavy metal shredding, you may be disappointed. Steve occasionally gets a little heavy, but not as a rule.

Another thing....of course Steve is a great player, but IMHO, he excels as a composer and arranger. You might prefer to listen to the Steve Morse Band, but The Dregs is really where his compositional talents shine. I also happen to love T. Lavits' keyboard, and Allen Sloan's violin, so it's not always just about guitar (did I just say that?).

You might notice some things that may sound a little Dream Theater-ish at some point, but keep in mind Steve did it first....and best. To hear the "real Steve Morse", I recommend:

What If
Unsung Heroes
Dregs of the Earth

Heavy stuff?
From a rock point of view, probably stressfest by the Steve Morse Band. This came out shortly after joining deep purple and it's got some chunky chord work, great tunes, and only a couple of slower ones, including EYES OF A CHILD which is to me one of his absolute masterpieces.

My least favorite track is actually the title track...but Steve's music is in my head more than any other band.
