Bought a used SR HH o6--Strung it with EB orange pack 45-105

Action and set up is good--no buzzing--- strings don't hit the pickups etc---it's set up good and plays very good and the tones of the bass are good.

I notice the clicking/ clack is quite prominent-- very hi frquency treble and I don't seem to be able to get rid of the click. Turning down the basses treble doesn't do it-----I don't want to turn the amp treble down as much as I need to, to deaden the click. That just ruins the tone.

I HAVE PLAYED BASS for 30+ years. I know how to pluck the strings and I know how to avoid the clack by playing the guitar in a fashion as to not cause the clicking/clack---(please re-read)

During my playing of the bass in live situations I use a technique of playing that calls for me to bounce my finger on a string to create a nice throaty honk from the bass. This is where I'm getting the noise in question. I would like to be able to dial out some of that.

OKAY HERE"S THE CATCH-- I have a 06 Sterling HS that doesn't have this thing going on. So you can see where this raises a question or two.

I would like to be able to take care of this by: not changing to flatwounds, not adjusting the strings higher- as they are pretty high already.

Is it possible to change the electronics to the Sterling type? Is this out of the question?

I've gone over this in my head for days. Any suggestions would be appreciated---please don't tell me I just have sloppy technique with my playing. This isn't about that--Thanks people I appreciate it.

IME, clicking/clacking is caused by the string hitting metal. It doesn't have anything to do with the electronics. Eliminate the strings hitting the frets, pickups, whatever...and the clicking/clacking will stop.

I do understand that the noise is caused by metal on metal. That's okay and that is really not what I am focused on. I actually use the metal on metal thing to get a certain sound on the bass.

The electronics part comes in as a matter of me not being able to lessen the hi frequency of the treble control enough, to a point where the clicking is not so prominent in the sound of the bass when I strike the string. I do the click on purpose -it is part of my sound . I can do the same technique for getting the sound on my Sterling bass without the same amount of click noise --- with much less treble dumping. This leads me to think that maybe a capacitor or a circuit or something in the EQ bandwidth is different in the Stingray as apposed to the Sterling circuit(which I think it is). Now I wonder if it is possible to change the control of the treble/frequency response by perhaps installing another control circuit or pot or something to help with this situation ( in the Stingray). Notice I'm not calling it a problem.

I am aware that the Stingray is operating in an HH configuration and that the Sterling is equipt with an HS configuration. Wether or not this has any bearing on what we are discussing is another thought to ponder.

It could be as simple as cutting the treble on the amplifier when you use the 'ray.

Nope not that simple--when I reduce treble on the amp it just deadens the sound of the strings and I lose the ring gut tone of the Stingray.

I think I understand. I've tried to do the same to get a simular sound to playing aggressively with a pick.

Does your SR have a 2 band EQ and the Sterling 3 band? Differences in the EQ can be the reason the sound is so different.

I doubt you will find anyone here that would recommend tinkering with the electronics. There are no "user serviceable" pots or parts in the pre-amps. Only the knobs in front. I would recommend trying to adjust the sound downstream (i.e. Amp settings) or try different strings. Does the Sterling have different or older strings. I've noticed the clack on new strings is very pronounced.

Last but not least, what about the Fretboard? Are both the same wood?

SR has 3 band EQ T--M--B (3 band right?) -----Sterling is the same.

SR has new EB orange package 45-105 strings----Sterling has Rotosound nickel steel 45-105-- played two gigs with them in the heat.

I haven't tried changing the strings yet. I hope that does it.

I do notice that the Stingray Eq adjusts in a longer turn on the pots.
If I turn the bass control on the Sterling 1/8 I get more bass than when I turn the SR the same amount of turn.

It seemed to me more an issue of him trying to find his sound on the SR and not a problem with his gear.

I'll be quiet now.
