I had a 2EQ for a short while, and now I want another. I LOVE the 3EQ, dont get me wrong, but the point and shoot of the 2EQ and its different tone is drawing me back in. Big fat funky single H tone.

Im quite happy to get a non-classic standard modern Ray.

I know EBMM have the Series 133 2EQs with a gig bag for a little less in the UK, but I don’t want black, blue or red, I want natural like the first Musicman I bought. Not sure whether to go rosewood or maple yet. Im thinking maple for the classic natural/black/maple style, but I do like rosewood boards quite a lot.

I can order with a white pup…or should I stick with the classic black pup and black guard?

I could go for natural/rosewood/tort/white pup cover! That would be something. In fact, this would look super cool.

This is all just aesthetics I know…I should never have sold my old natural Ray. It was a sight to behold!

Yes, I could get a Bongo. I am thinking about it, believe me. But that opens up ANOTHER can of worms. Eg, 4 or 5 HH, HS, which colour, do I wait for the new tuners, etc! Then we have the colour issue….which do I go for!?!??!

Tough decisions haha.

Thanks

(PS please chime in with pics if you have any to sway me)

Well, you asked for alternative thoughts, so ....

A Boingo doesn't hafta be a whole big can of worms.
The PU on the 1H is in the StingRay spot, which is
not the case for either of the PUs on the HH or HS.
A 1H has only 3 bands of EQ so it's almost the same
simple point & squirt that you seek. Acoarst tone
is very different from a Ray. And there's no natural
finish available.

Are the old S.U.B. basses fairly common in the UK ?
Those are the best bargain in a 2-band Ray here in
the US ... but again, no natural finish.

I have a bunch of MM's ... HH, HS, H, some with the
piezo option, and piezo is what I wanna mention for
point & squirt. My fave 1H fretted SR4 is a black on
black [rosewood] piezo. I actually bought it to have
it converted to an ebony fretless, but I was verrrry
amazed how cool piezo is with frets. Yeah I know it
sounds like more distractions than a plain 2-band 1H
but in practice, it takes less knob twirling than any
of my other MM's .... cuz it sounds great at almost
any EQ [it's 3-band]. Unlike all my other piezo MM's
which are FL and which I play at 100% or near 100%
piezo PU balance, this ax has The Tone Magic at the
center click [PU balance]. I hesitate to call it '50/50'
cuz I screwed the mag PU all the way down, as far
as it would go. Not that the mag PU is really quieter
than the piezo [if you test each at 100% of itself],
but maybe part of The Magic derives from the very
much lowered mag PU. There's a special quailty [on
almost ANY bass] when you put a big gap between
the PU and the strings. Mix in about 50% piezo and
you have TWO great but different tone sources at
the same time. And ..... you CAN have your natural
finish. The only downer is that the piezo option is
kinda pricey, which added to your natural finish will
really add up. OTOH, with a natural finish, you get
a 'matching' headstock at no extra charge !

Disclaimer: I'm admittedly evangelical about piezo.
I'm too far gonzo on them to claim any objectivity.
[But thaz how everyone should feel about their
own 'holy grail' tone, isn't it?]

When I bought one of my basses from Bass Central, I think it was either Beaver or Grasshopper told me that you can still order a regular SR4 with just a 2 band set up still but it is kind of rare to do. If that is what you are wanting to do, simply place an order for a 2 band SR4.

True, the 2band has always been available. It's just that no dealers ever order them because who wants two knobs if you can get three? MORE IS BETTER. So it goes. I've never had any problems getting what I wanted out of the 3 band, but - I hate to admit this - the 2 band is different. I think. A little. Somewhat.

But I'm looking at your list of stuff you have already....no Bongo. Far be it from me to try to sway you towards a Bongo, of course, but HAVE YOU PLAYED A BONGO?

I'm playing one right now. Hoo, they're kind of nifty. Weird looking, but you get over it.

I have the 2EQ on my Classic4 and the 3EQ on my 30th Ann SR and I like them both.

Now, what I'd really like is a 3 way toggle switch on the SR4H like on the SR5H that does the Series/Single Coil/Parallel option. I wonder if that would ever be an option on the SR4H like on the SR5H?
