just played my 3 musicman's and noticed that my sterling has a normal string sound, very direct.
but my 2 stingrays (2eq) sound like there is an envelope filter between it and the amp.
very strange ive never noticed this sound before. it is only in the first half second of the attack but its very noticeable.
like ive said quite envelope filter like sound in the first hitting of the notes... is this normal?
I don't think its my amp or anything because the sterling is fine, also the battery's are fairly new and my both stingrays have the same sound. maybe this is just the sound of the 2 eq?
if I play it just sounds like powwowwowowow :p

Can you give a better description of the envelope filter effect you're talking about?

Is it a level change or a tonal change?

Have you tried a different string set?

Have you checked the pickup height?

Strings are pretty new on one older on the other and different sort so thats not it. Pickup height is factory spec. It is really a verry short tonal change.

Mayebe a better way to explain is whe hitting a note the attack is really higher pitched and then the tone slides towards a more bassy sound... it does this in a smoot sweeping like way. One a few youtube vids i can also hear this but never as hard as with my bass. Other vids dont have this sound at all. Mayebe eq settings?
also noticed this only when playing finger style near the pickup.

Sounds normal to me, as best I can decipher your
description anyway. I have innumerable variety of
settups, strings, PUs, basses, etc in use and there's
sometimes and echo-like or phaser-like effect that
will vaary, on any particular instrument, according
to which string, how attacked, and where attacked.
I do bleeb it's all about the harmonics, since those
vary with string tension, finger location, etc.

Since I've come to accept this as normal, and since
neither you nor anyone else so far feel that way, I'm
thinking that it might because my string tensions are
less than normal [DGCF tuning]. So, maybe you will
be happier with heavier strings. No real science, just
my semi-semi-edumacated speculation :)

Where are your tone controls set? The 2eq folks will be able to suggest a starting point for EQ on the bass. (Mine is 3eq and the two models are different.)

Ths gollem. Sounds like you know what i mean. And string tension could be the thing here. Since it sounds like the string resonate a bit too much or loose wich makes them produce weird sounds. Playing with a pick this is not an issue so im not too woried about this but mayebe a size strings up aint a bad idea for me.
