Hi all - looking to get my first MM Stingray - a new Cherryburst 5 with rosewood, and am wondering 1) what exactly is meant by "select hardwood" for the body and 2) is the pickup alnico?

Thanks,

Hi and welcome to the forum.

For a new SR5, select hardwood will be Ash. As long as it was built after around April of 2008, the pickup will be alnico.

Placed my order with Musiciansfriend.com. Not sure why but the cherryburst 5 is on sale for $1420!

That's a good price. My guess is that cherryburst is not as popular? I love cherryburst, but I don't see it as much as the others like honeyburst and tobacco burst.

Yeah I suspect they just had an overrun/excess stock in that particular finish. Within a few days of my order the price went back up commensurate with other finishes in the line.

Anyway I am happy with the bass so far. I've never spent this much on a bass before. The neck is outstanding - this is my first 5-string but I felt right at home on it. And the electronics are quite flexible. I will say that plucked acoustically my 90's USA Hamer Cruise (4-string Jazz style-string through bridge) kills it as far as resonance and sustain. Perhaps this new MM just needs some time to age and settle(?)
