hmm.. maybe its just a switching difference? afair both the 98 and the new basses have alnico pickups.
i seem to remember something about series vs paralell switching..

Very wide question. What is the date and features of your new SR5 with respect to your 1998.

They're both maple neck/fretboard with one pickup but the electronics on my newer ones sound really woofy and boomy compared to my '98 . Was wondering if there's anything I can modify to lose that extra boomy/woofyness.

Every wood sounds unique.
Try to change the strings first.
Electronically they are the same - okay the magnets are 17 years older...
+1: every bass has its own sound. Ive got some verry similar rays that sound completely different. I even had 2 from the same year and same specs both with new strings and they where completely different.

'New' as in recently built? If so, your SR5 will have an alnico pickup, whereas your 1998 SR5 has a ceramic pickup (if unmodified, that is).

Ceramic is a tighter and brighter sound than alnico, whereas alnico is darker, so that's probably the difference. One isn't better, it's just preference.

i thought the first sr5 with the wide pickup (no "bulge" for each adjustment screw) was alnico. then in 92 they changed to ceramic, then back to alnico around 2008?

switching for early sr5 and later sr5 is fairly equal. only the middle position is different.
on the old one the middle position was the coil closest to the bridge alone. on the new one its 1 in series with 2 with a filter

the schematics indicate an extra noise canceling coil on the old one but nothing is noted in the switch position description about it being used

+2, first take a look how both basses sound accoustically (unplugged), you can always make a test and swap electronics, but i bet you will find almost no difference.
