Since the battery powers the preamp and not the pickup, I have to think that a jumper that bypasses the preamp would produce the same result as removing the battery.
A Stingray has a certain definable tone. When I grab a Stingray, I am absolutely sure of what I'm getting and I know how to make it work for me. A part of that equation is the active preamp. We now have some great EBMM options with passive capabilities, but - my personal POV, anyway - I want the Stingray to do what it does best.
There are some effects that have a active/passive switch that you might try to see if you like it. I don't know how well they work. I have one in my GT-10B but I haven't experimented with it.
What Jack says is correct, especially about Bongos I think.
However, thinking back to the Sub Ray, I'm guessing those who bought the passive version (which got good reviews BTW) would have loved the ability to switch to active as well - and vice versa - I just think it would be an extra option which I would use (eg on my Classic) to switch out to passive also - judging by how well the MM Sub passive sounded - same charateristics but a little less oomph!
This is the reason I went out and got myself a g&L2000, great bass, nice to be able to switch, BUT I have to agree with Mr Host, I want my ray to have all the grunt of the Ray and that means it being Active, when I go for my Stingray I always think of the attack that Timmy C got on that first RATM album, to me, an almost pick like attack, as I often use a pick to, this for me was heaven, a Ray must be active, its it soul imho.
I'd like to mod my stingray so that active or passive can be selected.
If anybody can link a video of the bypass being done, that'd be greatly appreciated.
Design is a bit of an issue as well, as the selection ideally would be external, although an internal switch would be much easier to install, it'd be difficult to use and couldn't be done while playing.
Ideas and comments are welcome, I'd love to see that video
