I currently have a 2007 LE Sterling and a 2012 SR4 SLO, so I love the thinner/smaller sterling style neck. However, I love the sound of the classic SR.

Is there a way to get a SR4 Classic with SLO neck?

Alternatively, is there an option for the 2014 SR4 PDN with SLO?

I got some email from bass central a day or so ago that the order window had been opened for a few days more or something.

But yeah, the classic is the classic. If you want the special stuff, PDN is a better way to go. Maybe go for the 2 band EQ instead of the three if you can for more of the classic sound.

I thought the Classic Series Stingray already had a much smaller neck radius? I've got the Classic Sabre and that has the same radius as the regular production Stingrays, which luckily fits me like a glove.

All are 4 string versions.

  • Stingray: 1-5/8" (41.3 mm) at nut 2-1/2" (63.5 mm) at last fret;
  • Classic: 1-5/8" (41.3 mm) at nut 2-1/2" (63.5 mm) at last fret
  • Bongo: 1-5/8" (41.3 mm) at nut 2-9/16" (65.1 mm) at last fret
  • "SLO Special": 1-1/2" (38.1mm) at nut 2-1/2" (63.5mm) at last fret
  • Sterling: 1-1/2" (38.1 mm) at nut, 2-1/2" (63.5 mm) at last fret

I took these off their respective product pages. Seems you've got two basic necks, the stingray style and the sterling style. I didn't look at sabre/big al etc.. Odd that I always thought that the bongo had a sterling neck..

I was actually talking about the radius, which affects the thickness and curvature (fingers to thumb). The Classic Stingray is a completely different shape. The nut width doesn't make a difference if your LH technique is classically correct.

Model:Sabre

Neck Radius:11" (27.9cm)
Headstock Size:Only 8.25" (21cm) long
Frets:21 - High profile, wide
Neck Width:1.625" (41.3mm) at nut 2.5" (63.5mm) at last fret

Model:StingRay

Neck Radius:11" (27.9 cm)
Headstock Size:Only 8-3/4" (22.2 cm) long
Frets:21 - High profile, wide
Neck Width:1-5/8" (41.3 mm) at nut 2-1/2" (63.5 mm) at last fret; Optional "SLO Special" 1-1/2" (38.1mm) at nut 2-1/2" (63.5mm) at last fret

Model:Classic StingRay 4

Neck Radius:7.5" (19.1 cm)
Headstock Size:Only 8-1/4" (21.0 cm) long
Frets:21 - High profile, narrow width
Neck Width:1-5/8" (41.3 mm) at nut 2-1/2" (63.5 mm) at last fret

So, judging by the neck radius measurements, the Classic Stingray is thicker (fingers to thumb) than the modern neck shape and therefore more acutely rounded.

As far as I know, radius means fingerboard radius which doesn't necessarily affect the thickness of the neck back-to-front.

For example, 1960s Fender necks generally had a (fingerboard) radius of 7.25". Whereas the necks on a pre-CBS Jazz can be quite thin back-to-front, later on in the decade and during the 70s they became chunkier while still maintaining the 7.25" radius.
