I got the new single from Duran Duran called 'reach out for the sunhine'. I'm PRETTY sure the bass player uses a StingRay5.

I think they used stingrays in the past as well. Do you know anything more about that?

John Taylor reckons that he was recording the new album on the actual "Good Times" Stingray that Bernard Edwards gave him in 1994. Apparently it was in storage for years as the big girl's blouse found the Ray too heavy after all the years playing with lightweight Aria's and Ibanez.

He goes on to say that he warned his bass tech not to touch the strings on the bass as they were never changed by Bernard Edwards, but the tech obviously thought it was a wind up and cut them off!

Info was from an interview with the UK Bass Guitar mag last month.

John Taylor is a very underrated bass player! Most people laugh whenyou say Duran Duran. But most bassists recognize this guy's real talent. I love the bass line on Rio. It is a line I wish i had the talent to write. By the way, how is the new DD album?

The new album isn't too bad... a bit over produced and a bit cheesy in spots (but then again that is Duran). The bass work on it is solid (again, over produced - it sounds like they put John on a leash in some spots). I saw John play the Ray out in Vegas last year, it is a beauty... and it sounds sooooo much better than the Aria ProII that he plays most of the time.

Well said - clever lines & fun to play . . . Rio, Planet Earth, Girls on Film - growing up in the 80's, he was a big influence in my playing & I learned a lot from him.

The first time our band played Rio - sequencers and everthing, the hair stood up on the back of my neck. My fav bassline from the 80's

How did it go over? Did they dance floor fill up?
It is like any song we have done. It worked really well at some venues/weddings and not so well at some others.

All in all we agreed (the band more so than me) that it may be the bass playing world's favourite Duran song, but perhaps there are other Duran songs that are actually more popular with the non performing classes????

We are not sure which one to attempt next?

That is once we have blasted Vertigo into the set.
