Hey folks-

I did some searching, and couldn't quite find the results I was looking for, so I thought i'd bug you all with a post.

I recently picked up a Bartolini MMC pickup to put in my '97 Stingray 3EQ. (I'm sure many of you are getting ready to line up and fire away with reasons I shouldn't do this, but it's too late, and it's my bass, so too bad! :D )

Anywho, I took it in to a local shop (that does quality work, and that I trust completely) to swap out pickups. When I got it back, everything was great, it played fine, but the pickup was set higher than my liking. I then figured out that because of the size of the solder joints, not to mention the height difference in the pickup itself, i would need to do some routing.

I first tried filing down the solder joints, which helped, but the main problem was the wire bundle. So, I got out the dremel and plunge router and went to work.

Some of you might be crying now, and I understand. The surgery went well.
I only took out maybe 1/8 inch around where the wire bundle sits, and now it sits perfectly.

Now to the meat of the question. I don't remember how the stock pickup was attached, but I can only assume that the white wire attached to the preamp where it says "W" and the black wire to where it says "B".

The MMC has several different wiring options; it was attached in series, so the red and white wires were soldered together and taped off, the green and shield wires were soldered to the "B" point on the preamp, and the black wire to the "W" point on the preamp. I put it back together this way as well.

According to the Bartolini instructions, the Black is hot and the Green and shield are the ground.

Everything works great, it sounds awesome...... but is it done correctly?

Wow, long post for a short question. Anybody who's done this replacement before, any help would be cool. Thanks!!!

Wow, thanks for all the help guys!

Seriously. Now I remember why I don't often read, yet alone post to these forums.

One would think that the ernieball.com forums would be FILLED with helpful, insightful bassists who would be glad to answer a technical question that I don't know the answer to.

Instead, the first response I get is a remark about my age, experience, and taste.

Awesome. Well done, gentlemen. Well done.

Yeah we don't take lightly when folks tear up great Basses, because your post we've seen a Million times and it's always the same question, Why does my Bart Pickup not sound good with My Stock Music Man Preamp, They are a Miss match. That simple.

And what can you approve on the best tone already, NOTHING. If it's not your sound buy a Bass that is. Just my opinon. Thought I'd share, lol

Most of us here don't mod our MM basses so most of us here don't have a clue how to answer a question about a bass modification. I would think that if Bartolini has a forum you would be more likely to find your answer on this particular question there.

Travis,

I also think it's very unfair to judge the personality of this forum because of the answer you recieved. I've found this to be a helpful, fun loving group of people here. Again, I'm sorry you didn't like the only answer you recieved, but you need to consider the subject of your post and the forum on which it was posted.

I just figured that if I have a question about the preamp on an Ernie Ball bass, the Ernie Ball forums would be the place to look first.

For the record, I think my Stingray is great. I also love Bartolini's. I thought, hey, why not mix the best of both worlds?

That's my opinion. I think the MMC sounds fine with the stock preamp. To each their own.

For the record, I don't know the answer.

And I don't care if you replace stuff.

Just keep the stock pickup for when you realize what a fool you've been!
:)

Ho, couldn't help myself. Welcome, Travis. Hope you get your question answered.

Regarding the preamp, check out Gavin's site with preamp info to verify your connections. He has both pictures and schematics of 2 & 3 band current preamps (scroll all the way to the bottom).

Preamps & Pickups

Yes, B=Black & W=White

That is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Yup, looks like the connections are solid. Thanks!
