I dropped by the local rock-n-roll palace to watch a show last night. I was pleasantly surprised. On the bill was Stabilo, and guests. The guests turned out to be an up-and-coming Quebec group called The Suits XL. They have a hit playing on Canadian radio right now, "Play". Not a half-bad poppy number.
Anyhow, when The Suits XL took the stage, the bass player was sporting a nice black Stingray5, rosewood board, matching headstock, black pearloid pickguard. He was plugged into Stabilo's bass stack, which appeared to be an Ampeg head and 6x10 cabinet. He sounded pretty good.
When Stabilo took the stage, that bass player was unfortunately using a Lakland 55-02. The big thing I took notice of was that despite the fact it was the same amp, and same stack, the bass sound was very different. The Lakland was barely there. You could hear someone playing bass, but it didn't really move you. The Stingray5 thumped the house, and you could clearly hear his notes. Big difference.
