So, do any of you knuckleheads know much about these pre-EB Stingray1 guitars? There is one by me for sale on craigslist - it sure looks minty. (Note, I do not plan to buy it).

What I find interesting about these guitars is the pickups. They look alot like the pickups on the Stingray bass. I was curious if anyone has played them and how they sound.

Here are some pics, it sure is nice looking for a 34 year old guitar.

Try searching some of tommyindelaware's old posts. IIRC, he had one and has commented on them before. I also remember other comments that these were designed when Leo's hearing was going and the ended up very trebbley. (BP's old stories about Leo putting a screw driver against the guitar and then to his ear to be able to hear them better)

Wow - talk about a "closet classic"; that one looks almost new.

Sorry, I can't help you on what these sound like; I picked one up and played a little bit unplugged back in the day but never did plug on one in to see what it sounded like. I did the same thing with a Sabre guitar as well; the music shop I was dealing with back circa 1979-1983 was a Fender/Gibson/Music Man dealer. I do know you are correct about the pickups; they are active and they are the guitar versions of the Sting Ray bass pickups. I didn't really get the Leo-era MM guitars and preferred the Fenders and Gibsons but I did have a Music Man RD-50 112 amp from 1981-1986.

Funny- was just thinking about these. A few weeks back I was a local pub and the guitar player for the band there was playing one. Not sure what was in his rig, but I thought it sounded great.

'76 Sting Ray I info

Hey man if you're going to post the pictures of my guitar for sale on Craigs at least put the advert link in there..............
Her's a little history.
I saw Lowell George of Little Feet playing a SR I at a local club in '76.......sounded great and he did play slide on it, one of the reasons I bought 2 pieces.
I owned SR I #11 Burst also, it was my touring guitar in the late '70's and did many sessions with it. I found the tones controls excellent I could get a Strat-Tele or 335 sound out of it and it was very quiet, ended up selling it to one of my students.
The guitar listed for sale was an extra I bought for a spare and never really used. Just kept in my collection. I thought I pass it along.....it is as new!I purchased it from the original owner, from under his bed.
