I have a 2 band preamp on my Stingray and I'm wondering if it sounds any different than the 3 band EQ. I've never tried a 3 band Stingray.

Can anyone comment?

I believe there is a difference electrically in that the three banger has a high pass filter which I've been told takes a little off the bottom end.

I have both. I can tell the difference in my study. I would describe the 2 band as raw and the 3 band as smoother (cleaner)....if that makes sense. In a band setting, they're pretty much the same :D

Which are the components that comprise the high-pass filter?

I remember it in a thread some time ago but various searches can't find it.

I can't remember exactly...it involved 2 capacitors and a resistor. One cap was lowered in value, another removed and a jumper lead inserted and the resistor removed with no jumper.

There was a big thread about it. It started with one guy retro fitting his fretless EB with Pre-EB electronics.

Eventually it died out when someone did the mod and ruined his pre-amp

I remember that thread! I was pretty excited at first because it seemed so simple and I'd love to have the low end of my 2 band on my 3 band Ray. I decided not to try when the bad news came in...

Ah, I tweaked over this business for a while, but I'm all better now.

The two band sounds a LITTLE different when listening to the bass solo. Most of us, however, don't play solo bass gigs.

The OSR (orange Stingray 4) that I had for a while and sold to bdgotoh was a perfect case in point. Beautiful bass, three band, and I OBSESSED over why it didn't sound like my two-band Stingrays.

Eventually, I took it out to a club and played it live and decided I was an idiot. It sounded GREAT.

Same with the Bongo Humbucker/Single coil setup. I was tweaking about that, too, but once I played some rock and roll with it, I knew I'd been losing it.
